Default Blu-Ray Leads in Europe

In order to clarify a little bit what's happening in Europe regarding the HD war, all of you could find interesting to know that, according to a SPE press release of today, Blu-Ray sales in Europe surpasses HD-DVD's by two to five times each week.

Blu-Ray has 67% of the European HD market, while SPE has 50% of it in Spain, UK and France.

I can vouch that, at least here in Spain, Blu-Ray is what you may find on the shops that has HD disks. Last numbers in titles (released and announced) is 146 for Blu-Ray, 76 for HD-DVD.

Yes, certainly in the UK I think Blu-ray is dominant and it isn't going to change, there's just no high street support for HD-DVD, and the Blu-ray release schedule is much stronger.

That's total domination by Blu-ray, but I think it should be even worse if not for an error. They have "The Prestige" as a Top 20 entry (#16) for HD-DVD but this was a BD exclusive title. I think Disney/BV is Blu-ray in Europe too. Also why would "Superman Returns" sell better in HD-DVD in Europe?

Actually that is not an error. The Prestige was released on HD DVD in Europe. It was released by another company other than Buena Vista. There are a lot of HD DVD fanboys claiming that exclusive blu-rays an not so exclusive when they can import them on HD DVD. But still, the general public are not going to be importing anything so it is still blu-ray exclusive in the US.

The Prestige was released in the UK on Monday on Blu-ray, so that advantage to HD-DVD has gone now. Another "catch up" disc released on Blu-ray this week was Enter The Dragon which had been out on HD-DVD here for some time. There are still some outstanding "catch up" discs such as Batman Begins, but the only one I can think of in the other direction is Blood Diamond, so Blu-ray's position is just going to keep getting stronger.

"Released on Monday"... yeah that was the theory, had been looking forward to it's release and had it on pre-order but the day came and went and is still out of stock at most of the Uk shops. Pre-ordered at Play.com, cancelled that when it went out of stock then tried elsewhere with no luck. If it was region free I'd just import it from the U.S.
