I hope this makes sense...In setting up my PS3 audio, there is a selection for center channel voice to be used in PCM/Lossless settings. It states that this selection helps voices to be heard more clearly . What does this exactly do? If I select Lossless/PCM sound wouldn't this alter the sound from the center channel? To be honest I really cannot tell the difference having this option turned on or off. When I play a DVD with regular Dolby 5.1 settings through PCM, the sound is not as "powerful" as when I play it through bitstream. When I play a lossless DVD through PCM, it's about the same as listening to a regular Dolby 5.1 setting through bitstream. Does the PS3 center channel setting have anything to do with this? Thanks for your advise.

I believe it's a "dynamic range" option. Not a "center channel" option. It's supposed to make the dialogue easier to hear but like you I have found it not useful so I leave it off. What is the rest of your setup? You say you can not hear a difference between lossy and lossless audio? Could be an overall system limitation. In my setup the dynamics are much better and the overall sound more pronounced when listening to a lossless track, even my wife can pick it out lol. |

The dynamic range is really only helpful at low volumes, however, I have never found it helpful. I feel a calibrated system plus a really good center speaker helps far better than any "software assisted" setting.
I'm also a strong believer (now) in letting your center channel breathe and not hide it away in your AV cabinet. |
