First of all, I just want to say this is a wonderful forum, with lots of great resources for finding answers to all my questions. Thanks to all who contribute.
Now, on to the question: This may not be a blu-ray issue, as much as a home video issue (BR/DVD/etc.), but it's becoming more and more prevalent as I watch BR movies on my PS3. The problem is finding a comfortable volume level to watch the movies at. Often, I'll put a BR/DVD movie into the player, press play, and I'll have trouble hearing/understanding the dialogue going on in the movie. So, I turn up the volume to a point where I can actually hear/decipher what is being said, but then a special effects sequence, or a montage, will occur, and it's WAY, WAY TOO LOUD. Maybe it's the audio mix, but it's frusturating. I'm constantly turning volume up (to hear quiet dialogue scenes), and then hurrying to turn it down because a LOUD sequence has just started. To tell the truth, the past few movies I've watched, I've just resorted to watching with subtitles so that I can understand dialogue without blowing my speakers. Anyone else have this trouble while watching movies at home? Solutions? THANK YOU. (hopefully, I've posted this in the right section of the forum) |

Can you tell us how the PS3 is hooked up to the receiver. ( HDMI or optical)
What are the sound setting you have set on the PS3. I had a similar problem when I set mine up but I was using the optical cable to my receiver and I had the PS3 set to PCM. When I changed the PS3 to bitstream all sound issues were fixed. However the PS3 will not output uncompressed sound over the optical cable, only HDMI. |

For video, I'm using HDMI to DVI. Therefore, I have to send the audio separately.
So, I output audio with the cable supplied with the PS3, and in the settings I choose the red/white option. BTW, I'm sending the audio directly to the TV. |

Agreed, with that setup you will have an issue unless the disc has a 2ch stereo track. (not likely on BR)

Never thought of the problem involved in 2ch stereo.
![]() I have an older Bose surround sound system, I assume it's 5.1 (5 speakers, and one big subwoofer). If I can hook up to a 5.1 receiver, would that essentially solve the problem, or is the problem in the audio mix of the B-R disc itself? I was watching Casino Royale, BTW -- which is supposed to be a top of the line B-R disc, I believe. Thank you. |

You will need to hook up your PS3 VIA toslink fiberoptic cable to a 5.1 capable reciever to solve the audio problem. If I remember correctly most recievers that you use the analog audio Red/White it will default to dolby pro logic.
