Decent sound is quite subjective.

How about some Logitech Z series speakers for a couple hundred dollars as a starting point and we can go all the way to some crazy a$$ setup for over a million bucks.

Hows that for a couple quotes?

Honestly, if you can swing a budget of around $1K then I think we can get you a pretty decent setup.

- Onkyo 706 ($600) + Polk Audio RM705 5.1 Speaker set ($350) + upgraded cables ($50) = $1000.00

Optional receivers: Yahama 663 or 665 (under $500.00), Pioneer Elite VSX-03TXH ($550)

Optional 5.1 speaker packages: Energy's, Klipsch's, B&W's to name a few.

Good luck!

Send me a blank cheque and I'll take care of your Surround Sound needs pronto!

Seriously though, I can't recommend anything without at least having a general idea of budget. You certainly can get into something for around $1,000, but that is pretty basic and you'll be wanting to upgrade in no time.

Can you give us an idea at least...a ballpark number?

John

I know some of you are laughing about Lou's suggestion of the logitech speakers for surround sound but let me tell you, in my basement office i have a logitech surround sound system, 5.1 and it has 3 inputs, optical, digital coax and analog. i have 2 pc's, HD DVR cable box and a blu-ray player connected to it; i just switch between inputs. with the optical and digital coax you can only get the cores DD & DTS but with the analog, you could get lossless if your player has analog out (you would need adapters because the analog inputs are 1/8 connectors but you can buy it from say creative to connect your 1/8 to your HT RCA's. what i'm saying is that is a complete solution and it won't cost a lot of money. if your on a really tight budget, there is nothing wrong with that to start out. i think one of the things that happens is folks who admit they don't know much about this kind of stuff are pushed into getting expensive stuff that might be over there head and they cant make the most of it. this is really simple, the sound is great. when my family is using my 7.1 HT upstairs in the living room, i can always come down into my office and still have great sound and let me tell you it does sound great for what it is. if money is tight, and your really new to this and dont want anything too complicated then this would not be a bad way to start out.

i'm just saying....

For general starters Onkyo has some excellent HTIB setups. I was super happy with mine for the 4 years I had it.

Normally no, because these systems do not have any HDMI Inputs. You would have to settle for optical cable for audio. And since you said you wanted to take advantage of HD sound, these HTiB would not be ideal.

How much do you think you would spend? ...you can find a decent entry level system around ~ $500.

But, many of those only have an HDMI output (no inputs). Or, they are limited to HDMI switching, meaning they won't extract audio from the BD player. They'll just pass it along to your TV speakers.

Don't buy a HTiB. You can get a good Onkyo, Denon, or Pioneer receiver and good speakers and sub, from Polk for instance, for under $700-$800.
