See it made sense to me that New York should be their first move. Then there were reports about the RBDJ blu-ray, so to me it would make sense if that followed New York.

I would have gotten New York on blu-ray if i knew about it before hand. I don't kick myself though because i would rather have other films.

Thanks Bollywood blu-ray. It makes sense for YRF to release New York as their first release. I have heard that it was shot on digital cinema cameras rather than on film. THe PQ could be very good depending on the cameras used. If they have used 4K cameras PQ would be very good otherwise the PQ could be less than a high quality (4K scan) film transfers. Anyhow, hopefully it would be better than the best Ayngran blu-rays.

That's true. I don't mind having YRF DVD's; they have the best picture quality available, especially upconverted on my PS3. Their blu-rays would be quite the sight though.

blu-ray is no match for the unconverted DVDs. blu-ray PQ is significantly higher than unconverted DVDs even on a moderately large display.

YRF has messed up some DVDs. They added evil Edge Enhancement to Veer Zaara DVD to an extent it is hardly watchable on a larger display. It is a real mess. The best PQ Bollywood DVD I have seen is Parineeta from UTV.

Don't know if this is true, but if it is, I'm soooo pissed. Just bought New York on DVD. I'll have to re-buy it on Blu-Ray.

I'm fully aware of the power of blu, though not all blu-rays look amazing. My upconverted Transformers, Dhoom 2 or even Tashan looks better than my blu-ray copies of 28 Days Later, Predator and Robocop. The difference is clearly visible on my large display.

I'd have to test again, but the upconverted films i mentioned may be on par with the first 3 Die Hard films.

Yes, test it again please. You should be about 2 x screen heights away from your large display for a valid test (provided you have 20x20 vision ). Test blu-ray and upscaled DVD back-to-back. Upscaled DVD possibly cannot match blu-ray unless it is a particularly bad blu-ray due to bad quality original content and bad transfer process etc. blu-ray has at least 6 time information than DVD. When high speed movement is involved (action, sports and dancing) blu-ray can have up to 12 times perceivable information than DVD (since DVD is interlaced). The upscaling process possibly cannot generate that much new information out of nothing.

I haven't seen 28 Weeks Later, Predator and Robocop, so I cannot comment on those. Of course there could be bad blu-rays due to bad original content and bad transfer process, however, Hollywood is now good at transferring and making good quality blu-rays.

I just checked highdefdigest.com for Robocop blu-ray picture quality. Apparently the first release is dreadful and PQ is bad. The second release is better but still not good!

Yeah, i'll test again tomorrow during the day. I remember the first 3 Die Hard films looking clear, but not as clear as more recent YRF DVD's (those Die Hard films are kinda old though). In Dhoom 2, the "Touch Me" song looks amazing but the "Dil Laga Na" song does not. Pretty much the rest of the film is superb. I will be able to test New York when it gets here.

I can say for sure though that the 28 Days Later, Predator and Robocop blu-rays are pretty horrible transfers. I only mentioned those because you said

That's okay. You need 20x20 vision with glasses. Make sure the glasses are on when you do the tests.

Hope you would be using 1920x1080/24p capable display with a blu-ray player with similar capabilities. The blu-ray player should be set to output 1080/24p and should be connected via HDMI cable.

If it is a 50" set, you should be about 6-7' away when you do the test.

I have yet to do my test, but i'm glad i didn't yet looking at your post here. Don't worry, i use HDMI as my primary cable. The set is actually 72''... but i should still be far enough to be able to test properly.

When i watched Heyy Babyy on blu-ray, i couldn't believe it. To me it's the best looking blu-ray i've ever seen in my life. Om Shanti Om is also awesome, but Heyy Babyy tops them all (for now ). Can't wait to see how YRF delivers.

I am with Blu-Curry on this. Predator, 28 days later and robocop sucked and definitely the YRF upconverted DVD's looked better. If the quality was going to be that bad, they should have never been released on blu ray in the first place.

Do you have any other Indian blu-rays other than OSO and Heyy Babyy. Those two blu-rays are not bad at all; I have seen worse Hollywood blu-rays. However, those two are the worst amongst the Indian blu-rays. Do you have Saawariya. It gives best PQ amongst Indian blu-rays - it is excellent. Then JA, Shivaji and Villu PQ are close to excellent.

Test all blu-rays that you have both Indian and Hollywood. Rank PQ in 1 to 10 scale based on your perception. Mix blu-rays and DVDs for the testing. Don't complete all blus and then go to DVDs. A mix mode test will give you a better result.

If your test is on a 72" 1080/24p display, you should be about 8 to 9' away from the TV set for all your tests. Set the player to output 24p. Do not change your seating position until you complete all tests. Try to complete all tests in one go for the best results. If you can involve other people in these tests that would be better. If they do not know whether you are playing a blu-ray or DVD, the tests would be even better. Don't tell the others involved whether you are playing a blu or DVD.

When you watch the movies think of these aspects of the picture. If you (and the others) could give a ranking for each aspect of the picture quality, the test would be even better.

1. Picture clarity. Skin/facial details in the facial close ups and medium size shots (where you can see the shoulders). Whether you can see the skin details or whether there is a smoothing and smearing affect which has suppressed the skin details should be considered.

2. Check the edge clarity in long and wide shots. Check when you see buildings or people standing where you can see the whole body (of a group of people). Check whether the edges are natural or you could see any unnatural thick edges which give ‘cut and paste’ type ugly affect.

3. Check diagonal lines in the picture, e.g. staircases, and check whether the diagonal lines are smooth. Check whether you could see any unnatural roughness or jaginess (called aliasing) in diagonal lines/edges.

4. Check whether you could see any unnatural jerks or jumps in horizontal pans. For example, when a camera pans horizontally check whether you could see any unnatural jerkiness (called judder) on people standing in the pan shots.

5. Check the clarity and the details of the picture when complex and fast motion is involved. For example, a fast dance sequence with group of people moving simultaneously on the screen. Check for the facial clarity and edge clarity of the picture when a group of people is involved in a fast dance sequence.

6. Check darker or night scenes for the details and richness of the picture. Check whether the picture is washed-out or it has too much black so that you cannot see the details in the shadow areas.

7. Check for the colour accuracy, particularly check the colour accuracy of facial skin. Check for the colour richness and density of the picture. Check for colour-spill from one area to another.

If you can rank each aspect separately it would be better.

Thanks for your effort. I expect the results that you get will be interest to all members. Please publish the ranking you obtain for each person involved in the tests for each blu-ray and DVD that you test.

Oh boy, that's a lot to do , especially if you want me to test ALL my 46 blu-rays and some DVDs. I only have OSO and Heyy Babyy for now; my sister didn't like Saawariya and my family doesn't watch Tamil films. I'm going to have to do this test on Monday as it's the weekend now and my family will be using the tv a lot.

Don't worry. Do whatever you can - no need to do everything. If you have the Pirates blu-rays mix them in your tests. These have excellent picture quality. Parineeta from UTV is one of best Bollywood DVDs.
