Need to buy a blu-ray. The oppo bdp-83 looks like just what i need.
One small problem. I wrote to oppo about sept 08. " I love my 981. Added it to my home theatre, to become main dvd player and moved my lg-531 to backup. So these are constructive criticisms. Since I've added the 981 I've been scarring my dvds. This is caused by me taking the dvd out of it's tray. The tray doesn't extend to full dvd clearance, like the majority of cd/dvd players in PCs and cd/dvd devices. The brand you are using leaves 1 or so inches of the dvd still technically inside the 981. Have seen this type of dvd player, doesn't fully extend, in some old portables! When you have 981 placement like mine, under the tv (low), occasionally I pull the dvd straight up rather than out then up. Memory lapse. But you don't get away with it because the dvd portion still inside gets scratched. Then you get this scarring. I know it's only on the top and really may only be cosmetic, but that's not the point. This is easily solved. Use a proper dvd carrier/player that fully deploys. thanks " did they modify? |

The tray used by the 981HD (and the 971H and 970HD) was specific to the disc drive they were using. That drive was purely for DVD's. The drive was chosen for its performance (it was a pretty good drive), and the tray operation was somewhat secondary. They used somewhat different drives in the 980H and 983H, and I recall those extending farther.
For the BDP-83, they had to go with a completely different drive - they needed Blu-ray support and wanted to have SACD support as well. That's why the 981HD is not a useful reference for how the BDP-83 will operate. As ArieS demonstrated in his picture, the drive tray fully extends. I still tilt discs as I lift them, but that's habit from using the 971H and 981HD for several years. |
