Default Did Star Trek: TNG DVD brick my PS3 Slim?

Was watching an episode from Season 6 (Frame of Mind) on my PS3 slim last week, and about 15 mins into it the video freezes, while the audio continues to play fine. I then stop playback, reboot my PS3 and resume playback from where it left off. It played fine at this point for another 10 mins or so, and then the same thing happened.

At this point, it was ruining one of my fav episodes of TNG, so I decided to just go watch it in the bedroom on a regular DVD player.

The next day I go to check on my PS3 slim to see if it was okay by popping in some blu-rays, and all of a sudden the unit won't playback any of my movies.

First I started getting movie playback error codes. It was the same one each time, and one that was not recognizable by the service agents when I called the helpline. Other times, the system would freeze up upon trying to play a movie, where the unit was unresponsive to button presses from either the remotes or the unit itself. Sadly I had to simply unplug the power cord from the unit to restart it. It restarts fine and loads the xmb menu, but still no movie playback.

I give up at this point, call the helpline, try to troubleshoot to no avail, and end up sending in my system for an exchange. I called today and the agent said in the service notes that the unit could not be repaired so they're exchanging me a system.

Anyways, just wanted to inform and ask people here if this or something similar has ever happened to them with their Slim? I don't suggest people who own the TNG series to try this though, because if the DVD itself is the cause of this, you'll be ruining a perfectly good Slim. At the same time, I wonder if I should try to play that episode again when I get my exchanged PS3, and see if it does the same thing?

Thoughts?

p.s. To make things worse, my 360 elite RROD'd on me 5 days later. Luckily I'm still under warranty

don't think a DVD can brick a system your player was probably just one of the few unlucky ps3s

It could have been any dvd to finally mess up the PS3, if it was failing to begin with.

nope, smoke free environment.

although my place has been rather dry the winter season. i have a cold-air humidifier, but it doesn't seem to be doing much.

i wonder if the lack of humidity was the problem?

Low humidity is good for electronics. Occasionally parts just go bad, for no fault of the user.

really?

i always thought dry air/low humidity was bad for electronics because of the static?

this is all heresy though, so i could be completely off on this one.

It is fine as long you discharge and ground yourself before touching them. Touching the metal casing of a desktop computer is usually enough just before handling electronic components yourself.

Electronics want cold (68F), humid air. Air conditioners remove moisture from the air and humidifiers must be used to replace that moisture in some installations. These conflicting demands create huge energy use in server farms even beyond the energy used just to run the servers.

Unless it is maliciously engineered, (i.e. a particularly destructive virus), media will not "brick" a disc player. Chalk it up to standard hardware failure.

Actually, it sounds to me like the kind of thing Q would do.

looks like Q might have had a hand in resolving my broken PS3

the whole process took me 3 business days to resolve.

mailed it out Thursday, they received it Friday, and I got my new/recertified unit on Monday.

impressive Sony. well done.

now let's go see how TNG looks on this thing. hopefully it doesn't brick once again.
