Default 300 - Picture Quality?

Hi,

Sorry if this is in the wrong place to start off with :P Ok, so I recently bought an imported copy of 300. I am sat watching it with some friends and I can't help but notice it's really "fuzzy" or as my girlfriend stated "grainy". Is the film supposed to be like this? I just don't understand why if so. Blu Ray are supposed to be really good quality in terms of picture aren't they? I just don't want to believe I have bought a dodgy copy off of eBay

Thanks

To put it bluntly 300 is a gritty film so they overdid the grain a bit, it's supposed to look like that.

Heavy grain, overly boosted contrast, video-game-like blood, and crushed blacks. To quote Rocketeer: "It's all part of the show."

Yeah, there has been plenty of input from both sides of the debate. I happen to think the Blu-ray transfer is above average, or 4 out of 5. No movie heavy in CGI is going to be perfect.

I don't know, I'm not the only one who thinks movies like Avatar or most of the Pixars are reference.

It looks like it's supposed to look. Make sure your TV is set up to display an accurate image lest you distort the intentionally grainy visuals to unintentionally grainy levels.

Ok, thats cool, thanks guys So the original Blu Ray release is a "better" quality? Because I only bought this one due to the cover art and digibook being so cool and so much better than the bog standard amaray UK release

They're reference transfers, I agree, but for depth and realism can they compete with pure cinematic genius transferred to HD, like No Country for Old Men? I'd say no, but YMMV.

The Digi-book is the best release. Same transfer as the previous, but a lot more features.

They're all the same video encodes as far as I know.
Since you seem to be new to Blu-Ray, keep in mind that not every movie is filmed to look like Avatar. If you only feel that "pretty" movies are worth buying on blu, read the reviews here to guide your purchases.

No!

It looked super grainy in the theater. The director wanted it to look that way.

The Blu-ray is an accurate representation of what we saw in the theater.

Both releases have the same transfer. In my biased opinion (because 300 is my favorite movie), after 24 viewings on multiple formats, the Blu-Ray still looks far superior to any other media source. Snyder wanted the film to look that way, and in one of the Blu-Ray commentaries, he stated that he gave it that look to not only have a lot of detail, but to give it a more war-like look that fit the time period of the film.

Well said..you said it 24 times? lol I don't really count my viewings. I know I should have chosen that avatar when I had the chance.
