There was a question posed about what was more important to you in terms of aural or visual importance at another forum, and I thought it was a great question. The OP there started the thread as it relates to HT setups, but it got derailed rather rather quickly.
Heaven forbid that none of us lose any of the five commonly recognized senses at all, but as this forum deals so strongly with visual and aural excellence and the pursuit thereof, I thought the question I'm about to pose would be an interesting one to get opinion on. There is no poll attached...just say what you want. If given no choice would you: A) Give up your hearing? B) Give up your eyesight? John |

That's a tough one. I lost hearing in my right ear for an extended period of time. M82A1 with no ear protection=bad idea. It was very uncomfortable and I could barely hear anything anyone said to me. However, I think seeing is more precious. That way you can watch a movie in 1080 and make good use of the subtitles.

It was screwed up for about 2 weeks or so but it's back to normal now. I recently went to the Dr. and he said I should have them cleaned but so far it's not bothering me. I guess I had a wax buildup but I usually throw some peroxide on a q-tip and it takes care of the problem. Thanks for asking though.

John, this is quite deep!
If I had to pick one, it would be incredibly tough. Considering I have kids, though, my life is all about them now, and not being able to see them grow up would be pretty dang hard. Not having the ability to hear would be absolutely devastating as well, as I'm a huge music fan, and it would be really tough to not have the ability any longer. It would also be potentially pretty dangerous, as in you can't hear fire alarms, peripheral things you need to hear while driving, and so on. Of course not being able to hear your kids or anyone talk to you would be pretty tough, but there are workarounds for communication, especially if you once were able to hear but now cannot; you can still talk and you would just need to learn how to read lips to continue to communicate verbally. So out of the two options, I'd have to say giving up sight would be the hardest for me. |

I don't see this is a difficult descision.
Watching my daughters grow up is the most important thing in the world to me. Also, providing an income to keep the roof over ones head would also be easier with vision. Losing either one would be devistating, however sight offers far more to me than sound. |

I used to think about this sort of thing all the time as a kid. I think you narrowed the senses down to the two hardest ones to lose, but I'd easily take losing my hearing over my eyesight any day.
Not being able to hear would be weird, but it seems livable. I could put subtitles on during movies, and turn the bass up really loud so that I at least feel the movie during certain parts. I have no idea what I would do all day long if I couldn't see at all. |

I would imagine that giving up eyesight would be more dibilitating. I would have to go with giving up hearing. I'd much rather learn sign language than having to learn to read brail. Plus I could still watch movies and play games. I'd just have to use close caption.

I'd rather lose my hearing than my eye sight, I couldn't live to not see the world evolve, kids grow up etc.

I think I'm definetely in the minority! I'd choose keeping my hearing over my eyesight. To never hear another sound of any type (ok, so I can do without the drive-by shootings or ex-girlfriends *****ing and moaning) would be more devastating.
