Busy, yes, but not Frank busy. I am glad YOU at least get to sleep. I think Frank records these commentaries propped up in a seat Clockwork Orange style, surviving on 5 minutes of slumber and an occasional piece of melba toast.

I mean, I can't argue with that, lol. In fact, I think I'm probably taking a LONG break on solo commentaries for a while, between this, Undefeatable for Vinegar Syndrome (specifically the HK cut), and the main four films in the Bruce Lee 4K set (though one of them was a duo commentary), my brain is mush... well, mushier than usual, lol.

Will this have a new transfer of the opening scenes on the Mandarin version? On the 88Fillms version, those are very heavily zoomed in (possibly to hide burnt-in subtitles).

And any chance of SPIRITUAL KUNG FU, or is that stuck with Criterion?

I think Spiritual Kung Fu is one of Criterion's, yeah.

And that's interesting about the cut scenes from the Mandarin version -- I could definitely see Lo Wei just chopping all that out of the negative and tossing it, leaving subtitled domestic prints as the only handy source for that stuff. Same thing happened to Cub Tiger from Kwang Tung IIRC.

I would guess that this is a case of "new" meaning new to North America, though -- I'd be surprised if Fortune Star had remastered it again since 88's release.

I don't know how Lo Wei felt about it, but it strikes me as pretty pragmatic -- the re-release is riding the coattails of Jackie's successful Seasonal and Golden Harvest films more than the original Fist of Fury, so it makes more sense to get straight to Jackie as quickly as possible instead of taking pains to establish its legitimacy as a sequel by including all these returning characters up front.

The long version was from an internegative, whilst I think the short version may have been from the OCN.

Putting length differences aside, the Mandarin soundtrack on the Cine-Asia DVD is different from the one on the Columbia TriStar DVD (at least some voices). Can’t remember about the English dub.

Definitely picking this up even though I have the UK release. The extras make this a must have.
