Default Looking for some advice

Im one of those kind of guys who likes to plan out big purchases, and im kind of torn on what direction to go on a TV. I would like to get a few Ideas in my price range for the best bang for my buck (while also going well with my other components).

Im going to be going from my Onkyo 605 to a 607, and my Panny BD-30 to an Oppo BDP-83 most likely. Im pretty inflexible on the the Onkyo, but im still iffy on if the Oppo is the way I want to go. If you feel like chiming in on that feel free, just dont bother with the Onkyo, I wont change my mind on that. I've loved my 605, and only want the 607 because of the updated codecs to the PLIIz and increase in the number of HDMI ports.

As far as TV's are concerned, im a bit worried because I am leaning towards the Panasonic TC-P54V10, but have heard that it has handshaking issues with the Onkyo, and Plasma has just always made me weary due to life cycle issues and brighter rooms (my room isn't too bright, but you never know till you get it home..). I also know that a lot of these newer Plasmas do not have the "same old issues" anymore, or not as much as they used to.

I was curious what some of the more knowledgeable folks would do if they were working with my set up, and were going to upgrade their dinosaur 1080i set would do. Im looking for a 52-54" set, that can do 24p properly while staying in the $2,000 to $3,000 range. I also cant do a wall mount for where I want it, if that matters.

I know the V10 is a really great set, and Im just looking for a bit of a heads up if there is something I haven't read about on this site, so I can do my research before I make my final decision.

I've read about a lot of the LCD's and DLPs and Plasmas on here and I am just trying to figure out what would be best for my size/price/other components. Its just hard to get it narrowed down to the best choices, so I can go out and see one of these in person before I make my final choice.

Thanks in advance.

well, I use to have an RCA D52W23!

I ended up buying a 720p Panasonic 50" PX80U. Lets just say, get rid of your TV right away!!!

I could only imagine how sweet the V10 looks.

Panasonic has improved their anti reflection screen...so even in a moderately bright room you will still get a beautiful picture. Im running last years 720p model and have no issues.

As far as plasma "myths", don't believe the hype. Plasma is the best bang for your buck as well as the better quality.

As for the Onkyo, I won't try to twist your arm...but what if you could get a Denon 2310 for the same price as a 607?!?!

How does this system compare to the Pioneer Elite SC-07? In your opinion of course.

Between the two, I would get the SC-07

but compared to an Onkyo 607?

Well..with that coupon price, it goes down to almost $500. The SC-07 sells for around $1,000 in most places. Is it worth $400 extra?

And just so you know, because of you helping me out initially, I went from spending around $1,500 to over $4,000 for my future complete set-up

Thank you for making this fun and informative.

Crackin has already addressed the 'brighter rooms' concern, and he is absolutely right. I've seen modern LCDs with more reflective screens than my V10.

As for life cycle issues, the new Pannys have 100,000 hour panels. The math reveals that if you watched your tv 24/7, the panel wouldn't reach its half-life (the point at which a plasma starts to lose brightness) until 11.5 years had passed. Even if you watch WAY too much tv @ eight hours/day...that's a 34.5 year run before half-life, at which point if you insist on hanging on to the relic, you can bump your panel gamma & brightness to get a few more years out of it.

I can't speak for handshake issues, as I have a little entry-level Pioneer that doesn't support HDMI...not that I'd run everything thru my receiver if it did.

I hear the XBR8 has a picture that comes close to the quality of the V10 (though not quite there)...but then, that's about double your budget.

Then there's the all-time champ, the Kuro. Again, at over 50", you're looking at more money...next size up is 60" (KRP-600M), and that's around $3K...no speakers, no tuner, no stand. If you order one, open it before the truck leaves, as a good number are showing up with cracked screens.

So bang for your particular buck, I'm thinking the V10 is the one to go with.

Thanks for the replies so far. I had to laugh when I saw someone recognize my old school RCA. It was pretty nice back in its day, but im there with you. Its time for a serious upgrade.

My friend has had an XBR5 for a while now, and they are a pretty great line of TV's (Tho I am aware of the XBR9 not being as good as previous series). I see a lot of the LCD vs. Plasma debates, but its just so hard to decide between the two types of TV.

I had also read about the Kuro's, but I was under the impression that the V10 was the new king of the throne on the plasma's? I know the Kuro/XBR8's are gonna be out of my range last I saw.

Im probably going to be checking out a V10 in person soon to get my own first hand look. Ive been putting that off because I have been doing all this reading to see if there was any other TV I should watch for while im doing this that may be as good or better.

My main concern is the 1080p 24p being displayed properly (which from my understanding the V10 does), if the V10 is not the best, or one of the best, I'd like to check out what is. With the price of the 54" V10, it makes getting a stand in the budget too. Giant RCA begone!

So where are the pictures??

...yeah the price of the Denon is pretty hard to ignore! I guess if you compare it by the tag, the Denon would be the better buy.

It does, and it is.

For 24p mode, you can choose between 48Hz and 96Hz. Some people say the 48Hz has unbearable flicker, but I just find it to be closer to what you'd see in an actual theater. Unless it's all digital, you're going to see some 'flicker' in the theater...how can there not be when viewing a true 24 frames per second?

And if you can't deal, 96Hz does away with it completely. I go back & forth, personally...depends on the movie.

I said "future system". I currently have half of everything, but I'm taking it somewhat slowly so that I don't just go out and fork over $4,000 all at once. But don't worry. When I have it all, you can bet your ass you're going to see it.

As for the Denon vs. the Pioneer, what exactly would I be losing?

Has anyone ever heard of this Home Goodz place?

They have a TCP54V10 for $2199, and a TCP58V10 for $2249. Just seems too good to be true..

I cant seem to find any type of online rating on their services as far as delivery/reliability.

I also see TVCity has a nice deal too. They seem to have a decent rating on NextTag and is a trusted seller through there. Anyone deal with them?

US-Appliance has the TCP54V10 listed for $1,999 shipped right now with a free Panasonic Blu-ray player included. That offer is through September 10th.
The problem is it isn't in stock right now. You can also get 5% cash back via Bing shopping which would knock off another $100.

They are indeed totally legit and have been in business for many years.

I just picked up a 42" Panny plasma for my parents bedroom from them. Arrived in perfect condition in about a week in a factory sealed box.

They are also fully authorized for all products they sell.
