With HDMI it shouldn't matter whether it's done in the receiver or the player. The only time that would come into play would be if you were using a player with 7.1 analog outputs that had vastly superior DAC's to your receiver, then it makes sense to decode in the player.
However you can't use bonus view functionality when using bitstream, so for all intents and purposes all bitstreaming does is allow you to see a different light on your receiver. CD is 1,411 Kbps data no matter what player you use it on. The PS3 has the ability to upsample to 24/176.4. I think the PS3 is an excellent CD player, but I don't think you'd want to put it up beside a several thousand dollar reference CD player using high quality analog outputs/DAC's. |

Thanks dobyblue,
Cleared it up a fair bit for me. Are PCM (LPCM) and Bitstream the same thing? So what options or settings do i have to have on the PS3 to get this out of it? Most likely it is like that already because if i watch a blu ray movie and press the display button it tells me the soundtrack is either DTS HD Master Audio or Dolby True HD, but it probably helps to get the right settings in case i dont have it right. As for the sound quality of CDs, HDMI will handle it perfectly im guessing? preferred over the optical out? Why would the reciever/player convert Digital to Analogue? (DAC), i thought it would be the other way around? what does the 24/176.4 etc mean is that kHz? what sort of settings are best to have the PS3 set in regard to those audio things? Appreciate your time/anyones time helping me out with this. Cheers for now |

CD's are digital, so are Blu-ray's, so you need a DAC. It would be the other way around if you were going from analog to digital, ie - if you wanted to perform DSP processing on an incoming analog signal.
I would keep the PS3 set to PCM. It handles everything that way. For CD I use the 176.4 option, it sounds smoother to me. You need HDMI to use 176.4 - optical won't carry above 24/96 stereo. |
