Question [Books] The Lord of the Rings

I'm in need of guidance from some Lotr fan.
I want to buy the Lotr book's trilogy on Amazon, so i want to know which is the best, since there are at least 10 different editions.

From what i could read in the reviews this seems to be the best:
http://www.amazon.com/Lord-Rings-50t...2186350&sr=1-1

I would prefer an Hard Cover edition, but the one i found has horrible costumer reviews.

Thank you for your help.

I have both of these:

The 3 book set I found at Barnes & Noble for $15!!! Couldn't pass that up!
This is my favorite book of all time....enjoy. Especially in hardback-they way this book was meant to be read.

Oh, I also have the copy you linked to-I use it as my reading copy. Very nice edition. Check out ebay-thats where I buy my copies of LOTR-I've started collecting different copies/editons along with The Hobbit and The Silmarillion too.

I read on the Amazon reviews that the hardback edition you showed me is made entirely with glossy paper, which could harm the reading experience due to the light reflecting on the paper.
Is it really that bad or are they exaggerating?

If you are talking about the top one-the only glossy paper is used for the illustrations by Alan Lee (which are incredible-by the way). Any copy you choose will be a good choice. Hope this helps.

p.s. the box set is still shrinkwrapped-I've never opened it and it is proudly displayed on my bookshelf.

I guess you're talking about the top. I have the bottom set and it's not on reflective paper.

Are these the EE's?

I'm also thinking of buying one. So in short, I should get the latter one? It looks so nice on the outside :P

the story should be exactly the same no matter what version you get (it is not like a translated work where different translators could emphasize and write things differently).

Also it is three volumes but 6 books, each volume has two books in it:
Volume 1, The Fellowship of the Ring: Books I, The Ring Sets Out, and II, The Ring Goes South
Volume 2, The Two Towers: Books III, The Treason of Isengard, and IV, The Ring Goes East,
Volume 3, The Return of the King: Books V, The War of the Ring, and VI, The End of the Third Age

Do you want the theatrical editions of the books, or the extended versions?

Just kidding..had to go there.

Carry on

How far into it did you get? The first 40-60 pages are really dry and tough to get through: "Bearg, son of Breon married Mirum, daughter of Hurin, son of Dorin and they live in the east of so and so, at the base of so and so, near the so and so river that ran through the region of so and so, bordering so and so to the north."
It reads more like a genealogical or geographical text the first part, but i'm on page 150 right now and it's getting pretty good. Not an epic story like LOTR, but pretty interesting, especially getting to learn more about Morgoth. I love the dark lore.

Has anyone tried tackling The Silmarillion? Sounds alot like The Children Of Hurin. Lots of backstory, history and geography. I think that is took me over 6 months to finish it and when I finally did-I really felt like I had a deeper expanded knowledge of Middle Earth.

I think you'll really enjoy it! If you like the lore. I really enjoyed the first beginning chapters: Ainulindale and Valaquenta. I get into the backstories of the Elves and Dwarves and Men and how they all fit into the whole scope of LOTR. It's a lot to chew on at times-but it I'm glad I didn't give up.

I didnt get that far into it. It was just such a hard read for me. I may have to go back and revisit it at some point.

Didnt another Tolkien book get released in the last year or so? Seems like one did...done by his son, but I cant remember.

50th Anniversary editions are the best. I have the hard cover (which is very nice) but also picked up a paperback for a few bucks used on Half.com (for when I was at the beach).
