Why are they coming out with another edition in September?
I heard this new one you can choose theatretical version and the director's cut which some feel is too long. is that the only difference? Do you enjoy the music in this movie, I heard it sound really good in 5.1 |

What I understand is with the current Blu Ray release you only have director's cut.. the new one might have both versions. Can anyone confirm? I don't care about the digibook or not.. it's all good.
In this movie, many people feel the director's cut drag a little too long. |

It is very good, but not a historical account of Beethoven's life by any means. The movie tries to explore the mystery of who exactly was Beethoven's "Immortal Beloved", which is all fiction.

There are no extended Opera performances in the Director's cut. The Director's cut adds small sub plots and bits of character business wisely cut in the first place.

Really? I might be wrong, but it sure seemed like some of the Opera scene were extended. But to be honest, I haven't seen the theatrical version in a long time and it was on TV.

Amadeus was a seminal film for me - it was one of those films you see as a teenager that becomes a kind of personal - even spiritual - companion. Along with Jaws, Excalibur, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Empire of the Sun, The Last Temptation of Christ, Aliens, The Exorcist, and a few others, Amadeus was a film of endless fascination, and a film I studied and memorized.
The opera scenes aren't extended - some behind the stage moments were extended (Mozart and Katarina after the premiere of The Abduction, for instance), and there are some subplots restored (the odious "Salieri v. Constanze" being the most notable). The whole thing was a marketing gimmick. If you have the LD, you already know the director was fiercely crtiical of the scenes that were cut, while Sir Peter fumed about their exclusion. The LD commentary is largely ported over onto the DVD and Blu-Ray, but they delete the tense arguments between Shaffer and Forman regarding the deletion of the Salieri/Constanze subplot, and new material is inserted. Those with astute ears will be able to hear when the old commentary is replaced by new dialog to fill in the gaps. The room tone and EQ of the voices changes utterly. I can't wait to have the Theatrical cut on Blu-Ray. I'll even double dip for it. It's the true "director's cut" of the film. Like Friedkin's theatrical cut of The Exorcist, like Kevin Costner's theatrical cut of Dances With Wolves, the the original theatrical cuts represent their true vision of their respective films. Costner admitted the extended cut was a marketing gimmick, Friedkin rails so hard against the deleted scenes in The Exorcist on the DVD and LD, you have to assume he took the studio money and released "The Version You've Never Seen Before" just for the paycheck. |
