Default Uncut Gems (2019)

Quote:
Stop the presses, man. Buried in today’s report about Adam Sandler’s next Netflix movie, this one co-starring Jennifer Aniston, is a tiny, “whoa, way to bury the lede” nugget. Sandler is evidently being eyed to replace Jonah Hill in the Safdie brothers’ next film title, “Uncut Gems.” Sandler hasn’t officially signed on, but by the sounds of the report, there have been some discussions.

The picture is a terribly exciting prospect. “Uncut Gems” is a Martin Scorsese-produced Safdie’s picture that takes place in the corrupt world of New York City’s diamond district, with Hill originally set to play the lead. “Uncut Gems” was written by the writer/directors along with their regular collaborator Ronald Bronstein who co-wrote the brother’s last picture, the anxiety-inducing crime drama “Good Time” starring Robert Pattinson. Bronstein has co-written on several of their directorial efforts including “Heaven Knows What” and “Daddy Longlegs.”

Should he take the role, Sandler will continue to confound audiences who struggle to reconcile the fact that the comic can act beyond the goofball role identity he has created for himself should he chose to. Sandler tends to stretch his wings sporadically and only when working with quote-unquote auteurs—Noah Baumbach’s “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)” and Jason Reitman’s “Men, Women & Children” being two of the most recent examples, but this approach has been known to backfire too (see the woefully misguided “The Cobbler” by Tom McCarthy, who incidentally would follow the film with the Oscar-winning “Spotlight”).
Adam Sandler in talks to star.

The Safdie Bros! That's unexpected.

Damn. Sandler is actually making good choices now. If only Will Ferrell followed suit.

Safdie Brothers are as exciting of filmmakers as anyone working today. Heaven Knows What (pictured in my avatar) is one of the most criminally underrated movies of any and all years. Hopefully under their direction Sandler can be Punch Drunk Love Sandler.

My thoughts exactly.

It's pure hubris of them to cast him.

If PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON couldn't get a decent performance out of him, who do they think they are that they should be able to?

Safdie Bros, Scorsese and hopefully an interesting turn by Sandler. Yeah I’m all for this.

So, it won't be a comedy? Safdie Bros + Sandler + drama = intrigued.

Saw this news yesterday... almost posted it but was waiting for some confirmation.

Going from Jonah Hill to Sandler is kind of bizarre (age wise)... but this definitely has potential.

Baumbach just got an amazing performance out of Sandler, and I'm sure the Safdies can do the same.

The most exciting directors around right now working with this scum? What a waste.

Agreed about Heaven Knows What, its a masterpiece and I especially loved the ending.

Adam Sandler turned in a terrific performance as recently as last year in The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected). When he's not making an "Adam Sandler movie" he's perfectly capable of doing top notch work. I.E Punch Drunk Love, the criminally underated Men Women and Children, Reign Over Me, Funny People. Even some of his Happy Madison movies are stellar, especially Happy Gilmore and The Wedding Singer.

I think he gets a bad rap for all the dog shit he does. But he's fully capable of turning in a great performance in really good movies. He's like Nic Cage in that way.

Side Note: I wonder if Jonah Hill dropped out because of the sudden death of his brother. (Who was the manager of Maroon 5.

Jonah Hill probably dropped out because he's working on finishing up his directorial debut, Mid-90s.

When the new Safdie Brothers movie thread bumped up I was hoping for exciting news - then I saw the Adam Sandler picture and thought "oh no, no no - they can't be serious - is it April Fools' Day yet?". Checked the date - it's still March, 31

To you all who are saying Sandler will be terrible in this, so you really think they are going to cast him without seeing if he is exactly what they want/need for the movie?

But Nic Cage started off as an acclaimed actor who got into so much debt, by his own fault, that he started off doing crap. Sandler can be a great actor, just as long as he has no control over the project. I mean, Scorsese wanted him for his cancelled Sinatra project.
