Default Rainbow Effect

Question.

I know with DLP projectors there are a small percentage of people who experience the "Rainbow Effect" and it causes headaches etc.....

Anyone know if this phenomenon occurs in small children???? Or do small children not focus on the screen with the same intensity as adults? (I've seen older kids, by the time they're 4 or 5 they don't even blink!)

I don't know if children are more susceptible to the effect than adults.

I've had 2 DLP sets over the last four years and I've noticed the rainbow effect on both sets. I've never experienced any headaches or other physical discomfort as a result of the effect. When I do notice it, the effect is always very brief and infrequent (maybe 2-4 times during a movie on the older set and 0-2 times on the newer TV).

No one else who has viewed my display has ever noticed the effect, not even if I've told them what to look for.

The effect is not nearly as prevalent in the newer DLP displays.

I referring to the 100" + Front Projectors (where I hear the experience can be quite discomfortable) I personally am not sensitive to it (thankfully!)

The effect vary from people to people. My friend for example turn green and 'vomit' litterally. It have the same effect as motion sickness or while in a boat. For me i only see Yellow and Blue but on a 100' screen, it is quite disturbing.

I would guess that children are subject to the same issue as adults in regards to RBE, as the visual system and tracking are pretty mature by the time children are old enough to appreciate TV.

I, unfortunately, seem to be hyper sensitive to color separation artifacts (RBE). I see them all the time on my projector with high contrast material (very bright against very dark material and B&W movies) despite the fact that it's supposed to be one of the best one chip DLP units out there in regards to RBE. Another good excuse for me to trade up to a three chipper soon.

Saccades (fast eye movements from one area of the screen to another) seems to particularly bring out RBE, at least for me. Fortunately, it doesn't really bother me that much. I just kind of tune it out. There are some that are really affected by it though(headaches, nausea, etc). I've never heard about a child being affected by it though.

Now, ask me if I had those symptoms watching Cloverfield a couple of weeks back. Oy ve!

I don't think there's a three chipper PJ at a consumer-friendly price. Even the Samsung DLP PJ Criterion uses is a one-chip DLP and that's already at US$10,000 retail! Enlighten us if there is a three chipper soon. It'll be a great PJ for 3D BD!

Okay, so how was it? And how was Blair Witch Project?

Nope-- all the decent 3 chippers out there are in excess of 20k. Regardless, I'm probably going to upgrade to a Sim2 C3X1080 soon, unless there is something better that comes out of CEDIA. The light output and image quality of that unit are just so compelling, despite the price.

I actually enjoyed Cloverfield-- a well executed, cleverly thought out take on the monster movie genre. Man, though-- the camera movement really gave me a headache. Don't think I'll be watching that again.

I really didn't enjoy the BWP the first time I saw it; I don't think it'll be making any debuts in my theater.

Cheers!

You see rainbow effects mainly if you want to see them.
In the past years I owned two projectors DLP (Toshiba an Optoma).
In the beginning, I saw constantly rainbow effects, because unconsciously I looked for them.
Now I seldom see the effects.
Basically the effect is visible in dark shots when you move the look side a side on the screen rapidly.

Nah i don't search for them, each time i flic the eye i either see Yellow and Blue. At a recent HT Show in Montreal i assisted to projection with different projectors and never searched to see if it was DLP, but as soon as the movie started POF yellow and blue here and there. Mostly during contrast heavy movies..

I expect small children would be susceptible to the RBE same as adults. If they are too young, they might not even realise the reason although they suffer from it. It is disturbing when think of young children and toddlers who could suffer from the RBE.
