Default turntable help

i am hoping to get a technics sl-1300 turntable, after doing some research on it it seems to fit my current set up of speakers and amps and is very reasonably priced. but these are an older of turntable and thus i am looking for some advice. i currently have one of those $80 you-can't-replace-anything-on-this turntables from sony. so anything is going to be a step up. i have that turntable hooked into a marantz 2262B receiver which i'm using as an amp and then feeding that into my onkyo sr605. i have been acquiring more and more vinyl lately and love it, particularly the 180 gram records i've found. so i want to make them sound their best without having to upgrade my whole system. does anyone know some relatively inexpensive ways to upgrade the sl-1300? the needle, cartridge, tone arm, etc. any tips on things that may go wrong?
