Help solve a geeky argument about Inception

Obviously big spoilers.

Ok, so the argument is - how many levels down did Cobb go?

Me:

1. Reality
2. Van level (in the rain)
3. Hotel level
4. Snow level
5. Limbo (where he sends Fischer back, then goes to find Sato).

My thought is that Fischer and Sato died. Cobb goes back to limbo where he and Mal spent 50 years. He deals with the limbo ghost of Mal, sends Fischer back and finds Sato and they both return.

My Friend:

1. Reality
2. Van level (in the rain)
3. Hotel level
4. Snow level
5. Cobb's Dream (Where he sends Fischer back).
6. Limbo (where he finds Sato).

His thought is that Fischer didn't die - and Cobb brings them into his dream (which IS NOT limbo - even though he is in the same place that was limbo for him and Mal). He deals with Mal, sends Fischer back, then kills himself or something to go into real limbo and find Sato and return.

So, thoughts, ideas, facts?

Depends, how did Cobb get from the apartment to the shore? If he died from his stab wounds then the would make sense that he went to limbo with Saito, but if he was already in Limbo, he would of just woken up. I'm probably far off, I haven't seen the film in a while

I guess Christopher Nolan only hires

Cobb was definitely in Limbo during the time he found Fischer. He must have been somehow tossed into the ocean or some sort and was transported to a part of Limbo that Sato had built for himself.

Well, never considered the stab wound.

My point to him was, Cobb and Mal went to limbo and built a world. When he goes for Fischer, he goes to that same place. It is even mentioned that the only thing in limbo is stuff constructed by someone who has been there before, hence the buildings.

I figured Cobb ended up on the shore after years of searching for him.

Any other opinions/ speculation?

Yeah, he's gone searching for him, for how long down there, we don't know. By the way he looks, it's a while. Why didn't he die from the stab wound? I guess that there's no where else to go after limbo and he did he stabbed there and not in one of the levels.

You're right. Your friend clearly missed the bit of dialogue where they say that Fischer was in limbo just like Saito. Because if you die in the dream, you're stuck in limbo.

Depends on how potent the stuff is they use. Since they used some strong stuff that takes them 3 levels deep, they would have to stay alive for a certain amount of time during the first level or they go to limbo. Because getting killed wouldn't wake them up like usual.

Your all wrong, It is a dream from the beginning. We are in Cobb's dream.

His wife totem was the spinning top, and he took it but no one is suppose to know how it works, that is what makes it important. Only you know how it works to tell a dream from reality.

When his wife Jumped she was going back to reality. Also take a look at the scene where the wife jumps. What the hell is she doing on the other side of the hotel when she is suppose to be in the same room as Cobb, its a mirror maze like they discuss when designing the layers

It was a mirror of his side on the hotel just like when they build mazes in.

Also when they are in limbo at the end, and they kill themselves they are only suppose to move 1 level up. From Limbo to forgers dream. But the forgers dream does not exist anymore since he woke up. so the dream get filled with Cobbs subconcious. He believes that he is waking up but in reality everything is being said off memory.


This is what is so great about this movie. There are so many layers.

It was a huge fancy apartment. That's how those apartments are designed. That scene was there for cool-looking cinematography reasons.
