Hi,
I have Samsung BD-P1600... I go to University where they have Cisco Clean Access router/network system. Unfortunately, my Blu-Ray Player cannot get through at all. I already took my player to the ITS Department, they told me that everything is fine except the part where the Bluray player won't get through the Gateway Ping during Network Test. Basically, I can't get online at all. And the University forbids routers in each dorm room due to bad past experiences so they say. I called Samsung Level 2 tech, and they told me that I have to have firewalls disabled and open up three ports (80, 443, and 8080) to get it working. But the University will not do this. Anyone else have had problems like this? Solutions? Or is there any recommended Blu-Ray Player that I could use without having to rely on firewalls or portals of some sort? Any help is MUCH appreciated. BTW I connect my Bluray player fine at home, but never tried Netflix movie streaming and such. When I update my Firmware at home, it was fine... But here on University campus, I can't except ITS technician can in his office. They updated my firmware yesterday, and no better at all. Help! Make my $250 spending worth it! |

Your only other option is to get another Internet provider. If local Tel-co offers high speed service through the phone lines, and your phone doesn't go through some university PBX system or campus IP-Phone system, that may be your savior.
Network Security Admins don't like to open ports on their firewalls. The probably have sniffer, protocol analyzers and other IDS systems running on the network to protect the overall integrity of the network. If the security admin is good at what they do, there is no way to get around their setup, when you attach a device to their network. |

If anyone had a wireless router, or the school provides wireless for certain common areas, then a wireless media bridge would enable you to connect a wired ethernet connection to the wireless network. IDK if this would be able to bypass the firewalls.

WiFi wireless router will not work since it has to connect through the university firewall/router to the external Internet. If wired connection does not work, wireless will not work if university has a good configuration to stop unwanted connections.
You really need your own Internet connection. How about a 3G USB modem or a phone connected to your PC. PC can work as a proxy to your PS3. Alternatively you may get a 3G broadband modem with an Ethernet port. |

Wireless router is in fact not allowed on campus. Anything with a router isn't allowed.
My school has wireless access point everywhere, but will the wireless dongle for P1600 be really worth the $80? Or does anyone know or have a Blu-Ray Player that connects the University network with firewalls enabled that works fine? ITS Technician believes that Sony, Sharp, or LG should work fine... I'm not rich so I don't want to waste my time and shop around... How can I have my own internet connection? Or the 3G USB Modem? Where do I find info like that? |

This may be your only option. 3G USB dongle or 3G phone which require PC to act as a proxy but may not be trivial to set up. Alternatively 3G fixed wireless router (which will not use the university network) would be an easy solution. Check with your phone companies.
