Looks like it might not actually be coming out on that date, if at all:
http://twitter.com/MangaUK/status/22005077186 http://twitter.com/MangaUK/status/22006464191 Edit - It seeks CoMix won't allow MangaUK to Region B Lock it. You would think after 2 years the Japanese distributor would realize that anyone who wanted it in Japan probably has it already. Thank god there are companies in Japan who only have a 6 months-1 year wait between Japan -> US/UK/AUS. CoMix Wave is a joke. Last edited by AnimeOnBlu; 08-24-2010 at 08:49 PM. |

They're idiots plain and simple. I could almost understand if they didn't want another Region A release out there, but not even allowing a Region B-locked release? They're so afraid of devaluing the expensive Japanese edition, but conveniently ignoring the fact that if anyone didn't want to pay the exorbitant Japanese price, they could easily just download it in full Blu-ray quality from P2P for free.
This way they get no additional money, no revenue from international sales, and I doubt it's going to make the five people in Japan who would bother to import a Region B Blu-ray from the UK rush out to buy the Japanese edition. Yeah, great strategy... Last edited by Pyoko; 02-05-2011 at 12:53 AM. |

What makes all of this weird is that Shinkai's other film, "Place Promised in Our Early Days," has one foreign release outside of Japan, in Germany. It is B locked and has forced German subs when you choose the Japanese audio. It would seem Comix Wave is keeping 5cm closely guarded from foreign distribution on Blu-ray for some reason.
The Japanese 5cm was released on April 4, 2008. It is coming up to 3 years since its release.... My only hope is maybe when Shinkai's 4th film comes out, CW might ease up on 5cm and allow the foreign distributors to release a Blu-ray. |

Had it not been for this lovely policy, I likely would have never seen this, nor would I have been able to watch it since.
If the idea was to keep a stranglehold on the market with the Japanese version, why not include foreign subs? Maybe this whole thing is some sort of vendetta against Shinkai, trying as hard as possible to keep him out of the mainstream. Alternatively, maybe it's to build up his cachet so that once he dies, suddenly they're in the money. These guys are thinking long term. I would just like to own a copy of this. I guess I will probably end up importing the DVD release. |

Hey guys,
I just finished watching the Australian MadMan pal dvd release. The quality is pretty damn good and holds up really well if you have a blu-ray player that does a good upscale. I have the sony bdp-350 and all the MadMan dvds seem to look almost as good as a medium quality bluray. Same goes for most of the hopscotch and Dendy releases. If you can get hold of the MadMan dvd i think you'll be pretty happy with it. |
