Default PS3 settings - new owner

After spending a week reading posts on this forum I decided to go out and buy the PS3. I remember reading a few posts where users talked about the PS3 sending a 1080i signal rather than 1080p when playing a bluray. I have a 1080p TV and I set the PS3 to play video through HDMI and audio fiber optic (cheap receiver that needs replacing). Is there anything else I need to do to have it play 1080p for bluray and 1080i for standard DVDs? Is there an info button that will tell me what resolution it's being broadcast at?

If you go into the display settings of the ps3 you can set your output resolution. You can also turn on upconverting from there. To check I usually push the button on my tv remote to make sure its displaying 1080p. I think you can also check by pushing the triangle or select button on your ps3 controller(during playback of a bd or dvd) I believe.

Settings > Display Settings > Video Output Settings > HDMI > Custom

Make sure all supported resolutions including 1080p are ticked!

Settings > BD/DVD Settings > DVD Upscaler > Normal

DVD's will be upscaled to 1080p. This setting can also be adjusted while watching a DVD by pressing TRIANGLE on the SIXAXIS/Blu-ray remote and selecting Image Quality Adjustment.

Awesome, I will check those settings tonight. I hit info on my TV (SAM HLS5687W) remote and it just says 1920x1080 60Hz.

Perfect! Will double check those settings when I get home.

Okay I had all those settings set as you said. When I press triangle and go into Image Quality I see some other options there(Frame noise reduction, block noise reduction, superwhite). Recommendations for these?

I for one tested those settings off and on during BR playback and noticed no difference at all in PQ.
