Before his commercial breakthrough with Boogie Nights (1997), writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson made this low-key drama. John (John C. Reilly), a half-bright loser stranded in Reno, is down to his last few bucks when Sydney (Phillip Baker Hall), taking pity on him, buys him breakfast and offers him a few tips on making money in the casinos. Two years later, John has become Sydney’s partner, but his lack of common sense goes from problematic to dangerous when he falls in love with Clementine (Gwyneth Paltrow), a cocktail waitress who isn’t above turning a few tricks when she needs to make money — and isn’t any brighter than John.

I dig around a lot and am surprised by how many releases don’t have a proper forum post. Usually I’m looking for comments and review posts before I buy, so it’s a real disappointment when I can’t find any here. I’d seen a few people wishing this was released and had to let them know. Sometimes a new release only seems to get posted in a label thread, and it’s really a pain to have to try and look up comments about a release from a few years back.

I think this was brought up in an Imprint thread, but didn't have a thread of its own.

This is from an older HD master, isn't it? I'll stick to my DVD unless I find this Blu-Ray for cheap or someone other label releases it with a new 2K or 4K scan.

It's probably a good idea to post about it in the North America forum. Amazingly enough the original pressing of this one is still available, at least from JB HiFi. I'm not sure if they still ship to the US though.

Imprint implied that the first pressing had a limited edition slipcover, but I still don't know if that means they'll be releasing a standard edition.

I'm in the U.S. and I've bought Imprint titles from Deep Discount ($30-$35) or even cheaper during sales at JB Hifi.

JB Hi-Fi still has it in stock.

I've checked a few other Australian vendors and they are all sold out.

JB Hifi (Australia) is having a B1G1 sale right now and it appears that Hard Eight and other Imprint titles are included. JB can be funky when shipping outside Aus though, so your mileage may vary. I live in the U.S. and was able to buy a couple of Imprint titles, but not this one. I will say that when you can get them shipped it's an incredible deal, and you can also request to have the GST removed (~10%) after you purchase.

Is this standard edition region-free? On Deep Discount, it's listed as Region Free but Blu-Ray.com and Amazon say Region B.

It'll be the exact same all-region disc as the first edition, only the packaging is different. Amazon specs are entirely arbitrary and unreliable.
