Better TV change your movie reviews for PQ? - Blu-ray Forum

I just watched Big Trouble in Little China, Batman Begins and Dark Knight tonight for the first time on my KRP-500M.

I have to admit I was really dissapointed! I thought Dark Knight always had a great transfer PQ wise and on my old TV I would have given it a 4.5 star rating. The IMAX footage was so stellar I thought and the main 2.35:1 was ok... The problem now is that I have the pioneer I guess I notice a lot more that wasn't apparent before. In fact I would say DK is really flat and the darks aren't seperated very well.

Batman Begins was always weaker in the PQ department but unfortunately it really showed on the Pioneer compared to my old LG.

This all came about after I watched BTiLC! That was stellar PQ! Sure a few scenes were a bit hazy but for a 23 year old movie it was just spectacular. Going from this to the two Batman movies really left me wanting more.

Have you guys ever felt this way? Watched a Blu on old TV and thought it was great and now you have a better TV it shows that it wasn't that great?

I thought it was weird because I was expecting all blu's to blow me away more than before but I guess now the problems get highlighted.

I was never impressed by TDK. I never understood how such a lackluster transfer got such rave reviews.

Did you make sure to calibrate you new set? That could account for making things look worse.

I did calibrate it but not professionally.

I watched Kung Fu Panda and Ben Button. They both looked spectacular and way better on the new set.

It was definitely TDK and Batman Begins bad transfers.

I mean they are above average but just not spectacular like 'everyone raves'.

I am a bit afraid now to watch some of my favourite blu's LOL (kidding)

Well then I guess it is certainly a case of a newer/better TV revealing more of the "warts" of bad transfers. I hope you never watch First Blood, American Psycho or Evil Dead II on your set. Talk about painful to watch.

What did you expect. A better and larger TV will always show up more faults. Compare the films with what you thought where bad transfers on your old TV and you may change your mind again about the Batman films.

I dunno I guess I was sucked into the DK hype when it came out. I actually watched the movie 4 times in theaters and only twice on my old tv since it came out. Perhaps I just thought it looked better... or I am getting pickier.

I am not arguing a better/bigger tv will not show more faults of a film. I am asking if anyone got the same reaction as me while watching a film that blew them away before.

Not TV related but I guess I am becoming a bit pickier. Yesterday I watched Transformers. This is a movie that used to be one of my PQ reference discs despite one instance of DNR I noticed just before Prime and Megatron fight. Yesterday, I noticed many more instances throughout the movie and some jaggies when Frenzy is typing on a keyboard late in the movie. I was like "huh? I never saw those before".

So it can happen as you get used to better and better transfers.

Also, a bit off topic, look at the scene in Transformers after Prime and Sam fall from the building (after Sam is confronted by Megatron). When Prime says "Sam, you risked your life to protect the cube," pay close attention to the bridge of Prime's nose. It's in pristine condition. The shot then cuts to Sam when he says his "no sacrifice, no victory" line. Then it cuts back to Prime as he says "I will sacrifice myself to destroy it". Suddenly Prime's nose is completely banged up. I found that blooper rather funny.

If you get a better HDTV you will see more of the things that are both good and or bad about a transfer. As more and more Blu-ray's receive better transfers, it is easier to spot those that are weak in that department.

When I first bought David Gilmour: Remember That Night I thought the PQ was quite good, although it had known issues which I understood. I've since bought many more concert BD's and the quality on some is absolutely stunning. Last night after watching Stevie Wonder: Live at Last (excellent PQ) I threw in the David Gilmour disc and was stunned as to how poor the PQ is. The AQ on the other hand is superb.

I'll have to watch BB and TDK again to see if this holds true for those transfers as well.

I have a 46" Sony LCD and watching TV on a standard def channel is almost unbearable (dish network really needs AMC in High Def because watching Mad Men windowboxed in SD is painful), but when I visit my brother all he has is a 27" old school TV and I'm always amazed at how good it looks.

TDK and BB are not reference quality tranfers to begin with. you can thank WB for that.

But i do see what your saying though, the kuros video processing is one the best. any tiny flaw your going to see it. TDK 2.35:1 shots looked ok my 40" samsung LCD. but on the kuro i can see many things thats wrong with it. screen size also plays a role in PQ.

The imax shots look way better on my kuro that on my samsung though.

Saprano:I thought Benjamin button was a very good transfer....

On general note:I find BD gives a much better black-level and colour rendering compared to DVD.I think that was as big an improvement as sharpness when I made the switch to HD.But the downside of BD may be that slight flaws in focusing becomes a big thing on BD compared to DVD.The good,the bad and the ugly springs to mind.

You are not alone on this. TDK IMAX scenes are just breathtaking .. just beautiful - no one can question that. However, if I put it mildly, the rest could have been lot better. I have read in the forum that members claim the reason for this is the original 35mm print rather than the blu-ray transfer.

If you wish to experience an immersible-panoramic HD picture (which blu-ray has the potential to deliver), TDK is not the best. However, one may see it as high quality if watched from a distance - away from the 1080P HD panoramic sweet spot.

Few movies that you should try:
Pirates, Spider Man 3 and iRobot amongst many other superb quality blu-rays.

Just move away from the screen when it is painful. That will reduce pain and eyesore since eye cannot resolve digital-mess that some blu-rays have. Such blu-rays will not let you experience an immersible-panoramic HD picture.

Batman Begins was always soft looking on HD DVD.. I assume blu-ray just received a port. The Dark Knight is inconsistant.

I watched this last Sunday and noticed the very same problem. It's very murky and lifeless, for the most part. Batman Begins does a much better job with blacks.
