Just bought my mother-in-law the BOSE accoustimass 10, which is what she always wanted (there's no talking her out of BOSE). She is also a Sony fan and i need some advice on which reciever to get her that would be good for the BOSE. Something around the $350-400 range. I've been lookng and reading reviews on Amazon and seems like the STRDG820 is pretty popular. Any ideas on which ones i should consider? Looking for 7.1 and HDMI connects. Thanks

I would likely recommend the STR-DN1000 at this point. It's a super-attractive receiver which replaced the STR-DG920 in the lineup. The 1000 also has 4 HDMI inputs and 3 compenent video inputs. Of course, it's 7.1 channel. Although the MSRP is $500 on it (sonystyle.com), you can find some nice deals well-below $400 online, such as Amazon.com. That's right in your price range!
![]() ![]() The new Sony STR-DN1000 7.1-channel A/V receiver. The STR-DG820 is a discontinued model, and if you want to go that route to save a little more money, I'd recommend trying to find a 920 over an 820, as you will get the added benefit of video upconversion with the 920. To be sure, the 1000 also has video upconversion as well. |

Yeah, she wants Sony and nothing else. She has a sony TV and blu-ray player. She likes for her components to match. I actually went to best buy and looked at the DN1000 and I think she would like it (the looks), but it didnt have to many good reviews. Also the reciever itself doesnt look to user friendly unless you have the remote. I also looked at the DH 800 which seems to have better reviews and a lower price. What do you all think about the 800? Thanks for the advice

Sony does a really good job of making their receivers as close to plug and play as possible, it should have an on-screen GUI (graphical user interface) so that you can see what your doing on your TV screen. |

I really appreciate the help. I think I'm going to go with the DN1000 afterall. Its a good looking receiver with all the features she needs. Amazon has it for around $340 which isnt that bad. If there is somewhere else i could get it cheaper, please dont hesitate to tell me. Thanks again to all

I bought a DN1000 a few weeks ago. We have a Sony LCD and Bluray and the only wife accepted upgrade was Sony - theory being less remotes. Everything in my system is hooked up HDMI except the Wii.
The GUI takes some getting used to but it is nice to see on the big screen. The video seems fine, really don't notice much difference from the straight comcast or blu-ray feeds. IF you can get the best audio from the player its Great, but here is my major complaint. There is a mysterious orange 'theater' button that must be pushed to put the system (TV and Reciever) in 'cinema' mode. Sometimes. Sometimes if you don't press this you'll get the highest sound available on the disk, other times you'll be stuck with 2 channel Dolby Pro logic II unless you press the magical orange button - then - DTS HD or DD HD. I found this after literally pushing every button on the player/remote one night when sound testing Behind Enemy Lines. The Sony manual sucks and only says that the orange button is for Bravia link system. Thanks Sony. All in all, sounds good for under $400 and if you need to please the wife and don't mind checking your audio for every disk, its OK. Also, I used the microphone to setup my system but on 'automatic' it won't allow me to tweak the individual speakers like my 3 year old Pioneer used to do. Will need to find time to manually set it up right. |
