Default Panny G15 compared to Mit. WS55313?

Have had a WS 55313 for 6 or 7 years I think. Wondering how it might compare to the Panny G15 plasma? The Mit is pretty good right now, only 1080i, but nice picture on HD content and with my Blu-Ray. It's a hulk of a set though and limits our entertainment center options.

Overall comparison points?

Maybe leaving specific models out, anyone care to comment on the overall quality of current plasmas to older projection HDTVs?

Newer plasmas will be significantly better..... most notably in terms of Black levels..... if the blacks aren't good.... then the rest of the colors don't "pop" as much.

i dont about your current tv but the panas dont have fantastic blacks imo... colours are good..

only thing i can compare it to is my Lcos RPTV.... my blacks are way better in a brightly lit room and very comparable in a dark room, colours are as good in comparision to the Pana G10....

Well I think I'm 90% sold. I mull over decisions like this for a long time. I think I'll head in and see if they'll take $1099. I have a $70 gift card and they're running 24 months interest free. That would probably do it for me.
Our current tv is about 7 yrs old and we have a nice center piece for our entertainment center that haven't been able to use with the big console set.

Just trying to get a few more reactions to compare overall quality with my older tv. I've never thought it's
bad but if the newer one would be even better it's an easier purchase decision for me.

best thing to do OP is go to a store with a bright room and see how the blacks are for yourself.... compare the black tv frame of the g10 to the screen.....

Maybe you could explain why you think the blacks aren't good when most every review and users say the pannys are pretty good? Is that just because you don't care for plasmas?

I imagine as a rear projector set mine does blacks well, but it does have a very glossy screen protector that reflects lots of light and images.

The only thing that has beaten the panny's in black levels is the pioneers. It has even been measured, there is some guy who has the levels measured in his signature at the bottom of his posts.

oool dont know about that... the 9th gen Sammy LCD LED backlit (not side lit) has very deep blacks and so does the Sony XBR8..... from seeing G10 with these two tvs sides by side imo G10 loses out in blacks... then again Pioneer LX or M takes it to another level.... Pioneer C series is still very good but still a little off compared to the LX and M models....

OP look for yourself and decide.... i just came from the JB HIFI television retail store......

However with those decreased "enhanced" black levels you will also lose your color range. Colors will pop, but you will not get as wide a range of reds or blues, etc. with those LCD's. Deep blacks though

Of course part of this that hasn't been brought up would be the price. At this point the g15 is pretty cheap. Not as familiar with the details on the other sets, but I would guess they're more
expensive.

While I don't agree with you, you're comparing a set (the Samsung backlit LED) that costs about 2-3x as much as the Panasonic. If money is no object and that trips your triggers, knock yourself out. However, I'd like to see some data that backs your claims.

taken from Home Theatre Mag

Sony XBR8: That is, the Sony’s black level is not truly zero, nor its peak contrast infinite. Rather, it’s unmeasurable with our Minolta LS-100 light meter—which simply means that the black level was below the meter’s 0.001 ft-L minimum sensitivity.

Samsung’s UN55B7000 LED-backlit LCD HDTV (HT, August 2009) had a measured black level of 0.002 foot-lamberts

from HDTV TEST UK:

We measured the calibrated black level on our Panasonic TX-P42G10 review unit to be 0.03 cd/m2

Note 1fL = 3.426 cd/m2

That's interesting. Do you happen to have numbers from TVs that are around the same price as the G10, or G15? Around $1200 US.

Also, I wonder what levels of black are perceptable to the human eye?

from what i have read G10 and G15 have the same screen.... maybe wrong...

discussions on AVforums have indicated the human eye is very sensitive to light....

I know the g10 and 15 are the same. What I'm wondering is if you have numbers for sets that areclose in price to them. It looks like the tvs you mentioned are a lot more expensive. How do lower priced models compare to the g10?

Sometimes it's really hard to communicate with text. I'm trying to ask if you have light test numbers for tvs that are similar in price to the g10. Measurable ft-L. The tests are interesting, but comparing the g10 to tvs that are twice as much doesn't help me much.
