PS3 freezes only in movies - Blu-ray Forum

My 80Gb PS3, the fat model, freezes after 15-20 minutes in movies; i think it's the laser tht needs to be replaced but since it is ok in games i'm not sure, i would like your opinions on this!

Maybe try some type of Blu-Ray cleaner....

i was under the impression the same laser is used for both since the games are on blu-ray discs...?

but i have no idea really. but it doesn't make much sense to me why there would be two different lasers since it's the same format.

however i know nothing of the technology in ps3's so if someone knows more, feel free to school me with the correct answer and i apologize in advance if i'm a dumb ass on the subject

I had the laser in my ps3 replaced 2x already. I have the same model as you and you're right, there is 1 laser responsible for reading both dvd's and br's. In both cases when my laser died, I was playing games and not movies. At the time the video would intermittently freeze before it eventually died.

Hello, this is my first post. This forum wont let me start a new thread cause im new. so im gonna piggy back on this one. I know this has been discussed a lot of times. And i have searched all over the internet and havent found an answer for the problem im having. I bought a used ps3 on ebay. which i regret. When im watching a blue ray movie and pause it for a long time, 10 mins or more, it will freeze and i have to do a hard restart. I only have the one movie so i havent tried any others but it is a brand new movie. no scratches. It also freezes when playing black ops 2 and need for speed most wanted. but im pretty sure thats a seperate issue with the game makers. I also used a blue ray player cleaner and tried the same long pause on it after it cleaned. And it froze also. Thanks in advance.

I hate to say it but it sounds like you may have bought someone else's problem. My first PS3 was an 80GB MGS4 bundle. Ironically, the only game it wouldn't play was MGS4. I tried a couple of other games and blu-rays and it played them all fine. I had to send it in to Sony for repair. IIRC they just shipped me out a different console of the same model.

I suggest contacting Sony and looking into what it would cost to send it in.
