I never considered myself picky about this, but I noticed that First Blood has neither PCM, TrueHD, nor HD-MA. (Although it does have EX and DTS-HD.) All the the titles in my meager collection do have at least one lossless format, and I am loathe to add this one, for that simple reason. First Blood is my favorite Stalone film. Of course, I'm going to get it, so don't just say get it if you like it! But are any of you also avoiding lossy-only movies that you would add if it were lossless?

First Blood looks great on BD and don't let the fact that it's not lossless dissuade you from purchasing it for $10 or less. The DTS-HD High Res audio is great for a film of this age. It's not lossless, but technically it's still HD audio. It's a great deal.

I'm just the opposite. I avoid releases without lossless audio. I want the total package of what Blu-ray can offer.

I don't avoid purchasing movies I like because of the audio, but that's just me.
The DTS-HD track on First Blood is actually pretty great, I don't think there's really much more you're gonna get from another codec, to be honest. For the most part, even a 5.1 Dolby Digital track on blu-ray will have a higher bitrate than its DVD counterpart or theatrical presentation. So while it may be a bummer if lossless isn't included, it's not a reason for me to avoid movies I love. Last edited by benricci; 09-23-2009 at 06:49 PM. |

While I would prefer lossless, it's not a deal breaker for me, either. Higher resolution, lossy audio can sound nearly as good as the original source. As long as it doesn't sound like it was recorded under water or in a trash can, I can deal with it.

i understand the primary attraction to BD is the outstanding PQ when compared to previous formats. but come on, sound is a HUGE part of the movie experience!
yes i avoid buying BDs with lossy audio. example: equilibrium with 5.1 DD. what is the point?!?!? |

I was going to buy Bonnie and Clyde today but then I changed my mind due to no lossless. I would take a lossless Mono but no lossless is loss of sale for me.
I think I have a few DD 5.1 tracks like Stargate but I bought them before I knew the difference. I want Superman Returns so bad but I can't find it with the lossless anywhere in Canada. |

Also, Many great classics have Mono tracks, etc... so "Multi-channel" lossless isn't important to me... so for movies like Casablanca for instance.... if it only had a Dolby Digital track, I would be disappointed, and I already own the DVD, so if the Blu-ray has any sort of marginal improvement in PQ on Blu-ray, I'd jump on it, because I love the movie..... The fact that the AQ/PQ upgrade is substantial makes it a no-brainer for double-dipping for me. |

I've skipped over quite a few for not having the best in audio.. Blu-Ray was designed to deliver the very best in audio and video, not just video. Of course sometimes we get transfers with sub-par video and some with sub-par audio unfortunately.
If I love the movie I usually buy still but movies on the fence usually get a rental at best if the studio only puts a half ass effort into it. |

Actually, OP, "reluctant" is a pretty good word to use in my case. I still buy lossy BDs (one of the best examples is First Blood that you mentioned, another might be Speed Racer), but I stop and think about it, maybe gripe a little, and still end up buying them if I like the movie and the PQ is good.
Lossless audio is important to me, though, no doubt about it. |
