Default Does PS3 work with Netflix Streaming?

Can the PS3 work with Netflix on-demand service? I've been looking for a straight answer to this question but can't seem to find one.

I apologize if this issue has already been discussed in a thread. I did search but couldn't fine one. I would really appreciate a link.

Thanks, everybody.

You can get Netflix streaming to work on the PS3 using PlayOn Media Server however it is not officially supported on the PS3.

PlayOn runs on your computer and allows the PS3 to access netflix that way.

But you can't get the "HD" content through PlayOn to my knowledge.

They have a 14 day trial if you want to check it out...I tried it, it was ok, not worth the price.

That sucks! Any news on when this might end? Any cheap and well-working work-a-rounds at this point?

I don't know how long Microsoft inked a deal with Netflix but I imagine it's a few years. The only way I know of is what cathexist had mentioned. I would also agree with cathexist that's it's not worth the $$$ for the program. There might be another, but I don't know about it.

Does your computer have to be on when streaming netflix to the PS3, or does it go through your router or something?

yes your computer has to be on, and you also have to meet the minimum requirements to get playon to work with it. Playon works as a 'bridge' to get to play your material on your current pc, to stream to your ps3.

Playon was worth it in my opinion as they also let you access hulu.com which just got blocked for ps3 users. They are also adding different plug INS for different channels 40 bucks a year.

Not missing much.

Netflix streaming is loaded with sucky titles. Almost nothing "new" at all.

Basically, it's the Starz movie channel.

They seem to be building their older movies and show list more than anything.

I still liked it, there were a lot of movies I enjoy, and with some of their catalog titles it's sometimes hard to find them on DVD to purchase. I canceled netflix solely on the increase premium for having blu-ray on your account.

Anyway...I suggest trying playon for the trial, then waiting a while until they send you a coupon for $10 off...cause I've gotten like 3 of those since I did the trial.

I have PlayON and it's great. It does require a pretty robust PC, but I already had that. It's also $40. Period. Not $40 a year. Netflix continues to add to its Watch Instantly and there are quite a few titles available now.

Can someone explain to me how this actually works? do you need a wireless router? I have a PC with an extra long VGA cord that plugs directly into the back of my tv. With this setup already working just fine, would there be any advantage for me to get something like PlayON?

No, you would not need PlayON. You can just use your TV as your monitor and watch Netflix off of your computer just like you normally would. PlayOn is a media server that you install on your PC. It goes out to Netflix, streams your Watch Instantly selection, transcodes it and streams that to your PS3.

I dropped my account down to the $9 per month just for streaming. Sometimes I wonder if that's too much, but I do watch an occasional show here and there.

Discovered "Leverage" while looking for something to watch on Netflix. That's a great show.

I just wish they'd stream current releases.

Default SONY BD players to support netflix. how about PS3?

http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6695609.html

Does this mean a possible firmware upgrade that would allow the PS3 to stream Netflix in the future or does it require new hardware tweaking of some sort? netflix streaming would be great IMO.

When the PS3 add's Netflix down the road, it would just use a simple firmware update, and unblocking of the site.
