United Kingdom Rouge (88 Films) Blu-ray

Order: Amazon.co.uk
Release date: 20th Jan, 2025

Quote:
Cantopop superstars Anita Mui Yim-fong and Leslie Cheung Kwok-wing display their iconic androgynous magnetism as doomed lovers in this emblematic film of Hong Kong’s Second New Wave, directed by pioneering queer melodrama master Stanley Kwan. Rouge bridges past and present in its tragic romance between a humble courtesan and the wayward scion of a wealthy family, who embrace death by suicide pact amid the opulent teahouses of 1930s Hong Kong. Fifty years later, she returns to the city-state to find him, drawing a young contemporary couple (Alex Man Chi-leung and Emily Chu Bo-yee) into her quest to rekindle a passion that may be as illusory as time itself. With its lush mise-en-scène and transcendently melancholy mood, this sensuous ghost story is an exquisite, enduringly resonant elegy for both lost love and vanishing history.

SPECIAL FEATURES:
• 4K Director Approved transfer from the Original Camera Negative
• High Definition Blu-rayTM (1080p) presentation in 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio
• 2.0 Cantonese Dual Mono
• 5.1 Cantonese Surround Sound
• Newly translated optional English subtitles
• Another Kind of Chinese Ghost Story - An Interview with Director Stanley Kwan

The Criterion BD is a real stunner already, so I'm curious how this'll turn out. Shame no UHD.

Yeah, this really would have looked incredible in 4K. If you're region free, I would suggest the Criterion release over this one for its superior extras, including an 80 min documentary, and a 44 minute memoir film from Kwan.

The big photo of Anita in the booklet is from Au Revoir, Mon Amour – a completely different film.

Hopefully that's just a mock up and it'll be corrected for the actual release itself.

I hope so anyway. I'm not a fan of hastily put together booklets with little care and attention paid to the outlay in addition to the essays. It would make the whole thing look amateurish - which is not something I would tend to expect from 88 Films.

[Show spoiler]
Not only from that film, but it's even the poster and cover mostly used at various places, including Fortune Star's website.

I messaged 88 Films about the image in the booklet, and they said they'll pass that information on.

The only real things that'd make this upgrade-worthy would've been a 4K UHD release and more extras, neither of which seem to be happeneing here.

I wonder if both Criterion and 88 Films felt the restoration perhaps didn't warrant a 4K UHD release? It looks nice, but it has a very thick filmic look to it. Looking at the caps at DVDBeaver, faces often look rather flat and lacking in contrast/highlights you might expect. http://www.dvdbeaver.com/20/rouge_bl...y__blu-ray.jpg

The original 4K master has a very dark appearance and weird colors. Criterion did an extensive re-grading job for their blu-ray release. Not sure if 88 Films will do their own re-grading job.
