Default Projector screen vs. wall

Hi guys

Hope this in the right section.I bought myself a Sanyo PLV-Z2000 projector for a good price. I'm in the process of building my HT Room from scratch. The screen size will be 157" wide x 89" high...diagonally 181". I got a quote yesterday for a permanent projector screen mounted on the wall. The price is really high, so I was wondering how much quality I will loose if I just paint the wall white instead of the screen? Specific type of paint I can use?Any advice/opinions will be great? I know you can get paint specifically to paint your wall to work as a screen. As I live in South Africa I don't know where in SA to get it, any ideas? The room will be very dark with very little ambient light

welcome to the foray termdj,

first off, we can have more response and informative postings if we have the mods place this in the projector section.

second, consider how bright (lumens) your sanyo can output, and how it would be on a normal screen size. the rule isnt always the 'bigger the better', in relations to projector screen size. you either loose out on contrast, or detail, depending on how far or how bright you're letting it run.

most of the times, the suggested viewing size would be at 92' or even up to 120 to be honest.

in regards to a wall painted to become your 'screen' so to speak, there are a number of paints out there that can handle it, and give you a better gain of around 1.3 onwards. depends on what kind of 'screen' you want, grey or white.

just a thought.

USA screen vs. wall

I have the exact same projector in a small budget home theater. When we built it, we couldn't decide (agree on the type of screen to install so we decided we would just project on the wall until we could decide. Eventually, we will get a screen, but for now the image is so amazing, we just don't care. Our projector is about 10-12 feet from the wall mounted on a Peerless arm from the back wall. In fact, our wall is just primed. We never even painted it. I would recommend that if it's too difficult to decide, paint the wall and live with it while you decide. I've signed up for a Focupix forum and have been keeping up with how happy people are with them in case we can decide between electric screen and Goo systems paint. Best of Luck!

Default Screens

Hello

This is quite simple.

If pricing is the primary concern; simply do the wall.

If picture quality is the primary concern; then the best screen that you can afford is required.

Screens exist for a reason; the best screens are remarkable, therefore, the full picture quality available from the projector is realized. Otherwise; considerable loss of picture quality is the consequence.

Thank You

how big is your room? you will loose alot of lumes @ 181". i used behr silver screen paint for a 140" diagonal screen. from the seating positions no one can tell its paint looks amazing alot better than some HT ive been in with a high dollar screen.

I had to put my projector on hold, but I was planning on using Designer White laminate from Wilsonart. I talked to a few people at AVS and they seemed satisfied with their PQ.

I shot on my wall for a year until I upgraded to a screen. If your gonna shoot on the wall make sure it doesnt have much texture because it causes shadows in the picture. Also Id recommend flat or eggshell paint(silver screen paints the best) semi or high gloss paint reflect too much light and hurt your eyes. When I upgraded to my screen I noticed a vast difference in contrast, color, and clarity.
Im using a Sanyo PLV-2 shooting 10 feet onto a 92 inch elite screen
