All,
I have been reading and posting on these forums for awhile. And yet, I have not seen any threads for the artful appreciation of film...everything has been the technical aspects, or the "wowie-zowie" special effects and eye-popping Blu-Ray discs. Sure. I love Blu-Ray. I've got over 100 now. But what my true passion is - what I have loved since a child - is FILM. I want to discuss directing, acting, cinematography, editing and costume design - all the crucial elements that blend to create the films that we so love. I consider myself a true Cinephile. I would rather see a film closest to its original format - grain and all - and that is why I adopted Blu-Ray Discs. Sure, I still love the razzle-dazzle look of eye popping Blu-Rays. But I love more the energy and the passion of films that offer more than special effects - a heartfelt story, or tortured characters dealing with inner demons, or utter intense acting that makes me remember why I love the movies so much. The Cinema. The maroon curtains, the gold tassels, the behemoth screen. The lights dim and the excitement builds as the feature starts. What's your passion fellow Cinephiles? |

Me, myself, I'm a film student so films have taken on a new dimension as I try to de-construct films from the production side of things. Watching my old films like Jaws, Superman and The Goonies I have, after producing college short films, gained a new appreciation for the work that goes into making films.
I've always loved the big screen, having spent formative years watching movies of all kinds. As I was a nerdy kinda of child growing up, my family and films were what I had to fall back on instead of friends. But after a few years I drifted away from films and gained all the skills needed to survive and thrive in the big wide world. But in my mid-twenties (which coincided with finally getting decent internet access) I came back to films with a bang. For me, I love a good epic. I don't mean the c%*p that passes for "epic" these days. I'm talking about The Ten Commandments, Lawrence of Arabia, The Searchers, Quo Vadis, The Godfather, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Last Emperor, Dances with Wolves, Gladiator and so on. It doesn't have a story about BIG EVENTS it just has to tackle the basic problems humans face both externally and internally. Hope this helps start off your thread, Disky. |

This has probably been posted in the wrong area, probably should have gone into the movie and tv discussion area. Anyway, I consider myself a cinefile, and love nearly every kind of film 'genre' that exists. I like the large blockbusters with many special effects (Star Trek, Transformers), I like lower budget action films (Serenity, Danny Thr Dog), I like large budget, heavy effect dramas (Curious Case of Benjamin Button), I like fantasy films (Pans Labyrinth, LOTR trillogy), I like chick flicks (Love Actually, The Notebook), I like campy horror films (evil dead trillogy), I like 'true' horror films (Alien), I like dramas (Requiem, The Aviator etc), I like gangster films (Casino), I like 'cartoon' films (Futurama and Simpsons films), I like comedy's (The Weatherman, 17 Again), I like musicals (Sweeney Todd) and the list goes on.

I don't know if some truly understands what a Cinephile really means. It's not watching Casino and saying it is awesome. It's not collecting Tarantinos' and Martin Scorseses' best movies and say you know film. Do you all? Do you know that every Tarantino film is cut and pastes of genres and film scenes/characters done decades before him and paste them together thinking no one knows and people call him genius. He takes and keeps on taking from the French New Wave, and puts them in 2009 and people think he is awesome, besides the people who has actually watched those movies from that era.
From Wikipedia: "A cinephile is a person with a strong interest in films, film theory and film criticism." So then you all know the theory that was put behind Transformers? Or how about the criticism for Schindler's List by actual "Cinephiles" like Jean-Luc Godard and Kubrick? Or do you block out the criticism because Spielberg is really famous among geeks, because he works his magic, that he has to be awesome. His own friend Kubrick has said, "The thing is, Schindler's List is about success, the Holocaust was about failure." Schindler's List had "save those few people" happy ending. "A man can do what a man can do", and stop death for a few people. But that's not what Holocaust is about, it's about complete failure of civilization, to allow 6 million people to die. And I know which side I'd rather be on. I'd like to have a nice house like Spielberg, but I know which side I'd rather be on." Real Cinephiles would know Schindler's List is nothing but a mainstream, tear-jerking way of presenting the Holocaust. But if Spielberg actually wanted to honor and preserve the memories of those times, why did one of the greatest director's of all time Godard accused Spielberg of using his film Schindler's List to make a profit of tragedy while Schindler's wife lived in poverty in Argentina. Not to start a fight, but to be a "cinephile" you have understand more than the popular Taxi Driver when Marty's "The King Of Comedy" is a better film. Stuff like that. So Spielberg fans, don't flame. I just learn by watching and understanding, not word of mouth on the internet. Last edited by SpiderBaby; 11-02-2009 at 05:01 AM. |

Are you serious, or are you just another poster on here that wants to fight with me because I am not limited in my movie watching? I would love another person who actually knows what he is talking about on here too.

Awesome. Would love to chat on these forums. I love Tarantino too (my 2nd fav Hollywood director behind Paul Thomas Anderson today) but I am a bigger Godard fan. When I see more and more films I just see Tarantino's films taking and taking. I love Tarantino's films, not a hater of his. Jackie Brown is my fav Tarantino. |

Wow, you're not at all pompous and self-important. Sounds like those with expensive audio systems claiming there huge audiphiles because of there system (and implying that they therfore must be more of an audiophile then those with 'inferior' systems). If you want a real discussion i'm interested, but if your just here to bloat your ego, i'll go elsewhere (eg: stating opinions as facts and arguing based on these so called facts, is a waste of my time). I hope I have just misread/interpreted your post though

I like to say some things for people who think I am strict in my movie watching:
Will Ferrell - genius (more than he may think.) Nicolas Cage - one of the best actors in the business today. Observe and Report - top 10 American movie of the year. I like Indiana Jones movies (fun). What? Oh Crap, I said that? Yes. Oh, I also like Batman. I guess since I grew up liking Batman, that it stuck. Wasn't born liking Godard. Only GREW into liking Godard. You grow branching out. I love movies. All aspects: dialogue, monologue, cinematography, mise en scene, direction, acting, all of it. I can really discuss anything about movies from "the significance of this artifact if very powerful and relevent to this character because..." to "Wow, that explosion was cool".
The reason for my love of Blu-ray is seperate from my love of film; I love technology. If I didn't care about technolgy, I would be fine watching DVDs (I think). I've seen on forums people say "Comeies do not improve with Blu-ray) I get what they are saying but I like having a beautiful picture with my entertaining movie; whether they be beautiful films in picture or story. |

not by the standards you set forth, i suppose! i don't aspire to some higher understanding of film, i simply love the artform, and have no interest in film theory, criticism, or philosophy, because i enjoy good films on the same level that i enjoy good music: it's a very personal thing and something i'm not able to or care to verbalize.

I love how cinephiles generally seem to hate Tarantino, even though they would probably fail to uphold their end of a conversation about film with him.
Just because Tarantino skipped film school and is more successful than 99.99% of the cinephiles that those schools pump out, that isn't a reason to hate him. Who cares if he's cutting and pasting from old movies? Can people not be inspired, or pay tribute? Are you really naive enough to believe everything is a new idea, or hasn't been done before? If Tarantino is indeed an idiot who just copies old movies, then what's stopping any other idiot from doing the same thing and having the same success? I'm not much of a Tarantino fan, but he's certainly a unique guy, and you can't help but know a Tarantino movie when you see one. I think he deserves all the credit he gets, even if I personally don't like his style of movies. |

To me a cinephile is two things.
1. Someone with a respect for older movies as well as how movies have developed over the years. 2. A person who watches movies with an attention to specific details. They don't just watch a movie they deconstruct it, intentionally or not, and are aware of how every facet of a movie is relevant to the overall effect on the person watching it. I myself am not a cinephile. I've only seen a few older movies and my analytical skills aren't really developed. That being said I respect cinephiles as long as they don't hate "entertainment movies" too much. If a movie is okay with being one-dimensional and is good at it then you either appreciate it for what it is or you should ignore it. |
