Default Planet Earth

I thought both versions had the same transfer, but i just read the user review of the region B one on this site, and he says the PQ & AQ are rubbish...

Can anyone confirm so? i was about to purchase it

I've read the opposite: The UK/Reg.B transfer is allegedly superior to the US/Reg.A transfer. I don't have the US transfer, so I can't compare PQ/AQ, but I can tell you though that the UK/Reg.B transfer uses Sir Attenburough's narration, which is reason enough to prefer it. I've also read that the UK transfer is also blessed with a slightly longer running time.

EDIT: Maybe what I'm seeing is the difference between the Discovery Channel version and the BBC version. I have no idea if the BBC version being sold in the States is any different from the BBC version sold in the UK. As the BBC version sold in the UK is region free, it's likely that the contents are identical. But the same cannot be said if you're comparing the Discovery Channel version to the BBC version.

If it's the same user review that I just read, the reviewer is referring to the DVD version. He goes on to say that the Blu-ray version didn't suffer from the issues he described. Why he would post a review based on a DVD is beyond me.

I have the David Attenborough version....it's excellent. Go and buy it! You won't be disappointed.

This programme is nothing but spectacular. The UK version does not, I repeat NOT suffer from any of the problems of the review posted on this site. I can only believe the person who posted it did not watch it. Buy the UK region free, it is 1080P and not 1080I (only difference I can see) and has the sublime tones of Attenbourgh.

You mean this five disc Attenborough narrated BBC set from 2 Entertain Video https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Plane...-Blu-ray/1918/ ?

As far as I know the first four discs of the 2 Entertain/BBC set are the same four 1080p24 discs as the Attenborough Warner/BBC US release reviewed here, plus the addition of a fifth 1080i bonus disc supplement: "Desert Lions, Snow Leopards".

(As opposed to the Weaver narrated four disc Discovery Channel US 1080i edition here)

.
I think maybe this user reviewer is complaining in part about Planet Earth being presented at 24 frames per second (24p) instead of 50 interlaced fields (50i) like the original BBC broadcast, and on his equipment at 720p due to some frame rate issue (24p ->50p?) (60Hz to 50Hz?) it creates either 24 -> 25 judder (frame repeats, every second one frame has to be repeated twice) or other motion artifacts which woudn't happen if the discs were in 50i, or his display/player settings were not handling 24p or 60Hz correctly (Ether a Display should accept 24p and display it a lets say 72/96/120 Hz or player or display should convert 24p into 60Hz and display at 60Hz etc), not in 50Hz.

The user review was on Dec 12 08, and the only time the user posted so we may never know

I'm referring to this one sold at amazon.co.uk http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...pf_rd_i=468294

I'ts not just one bad review i've read, ofcourse, most of them say its amazin, stunning etc, but then i've found a few that say the show can give you the best images and right away some soft stuff that dissapoints the whole program.

I want to be impressed, to find crisp images of our world, and beautiful surround sounds of the nature, thats what its suppose to be right? its just i want to be sure before i spend the cash

Thanks for the answers by the way!

You'll be impressed! Just go out and get it.

If you have any doubts...get BARAKA!

John

PS~ Reviews are reviews and subjective. Don't base a purchase on just them.

That's the same five disc 2 Entertain Video/BBC UK set I posted above (click on the pre-order link) whose first four discs should be equivalent to the four discs of the Warner/BBC US released set.

I would definitely recommend a purchase. The only real 'flaw' I've seen is interestingly right at the opening titles of the episodes: The title shot to each episode is an orbital view of a sunrise that does have some noticeable color-banding, but other than that I can't see how you'd be disappointed with it.

I imported the UK version with the 1080i supplements.

There are a few scenes shot in the dark which have plenty of noise in the image. Around 90 percent of the material is wonderful quality.

This series will make you feel small and insignificant. Truly majestic stuff. It looks like it was shot on five different planets rather than one.

So tell me, before i finally click on the button... is it like looking through a window right to the nature!?

hahah

What about the in-water footage? i guess that can't be so eye poping, can it? i mean it cant be that crystal image, instead mostly soft i guess, even some noise..

I love sea documentaries, specially if they are about sharks, are there any sharks in here?

There are sharks. One shark is captured completely above the water. These include excellent underwater footage. The colors are so vivid. Most of it is very clear. Some shots are taken at the deepest depths ever captured on film and are a little noisy. It's the best underwater footage I have seen. The Dumbo octopus is a weird looking creature.

There is over 10 hours of stuff to choose from. Every episode is essential viewing. It's possibly the best BD purchase you can make. I bought it in January and am actually watching it again this week. I saw episode 2 yesterday.

Just buy it.
