Don't mind double dipping when it is a new format. Going from DVD to Blu-ray is fine. However, double dipping in the same format gets annoying. Already bought Goodfellas twice on DVD. I love this movie; I want the Blu-ray. The thing keeping me away is the audio. If I buy it now, will they release it again tomorrow with HD sound.
Other I am wondering if a re-release on Blu-ray is in the works: The Usual Suspects (special features), also wondering if the Rocky set will have an improved Rocky I disc. How long should I wait for Goodfellas? The Usual Suspects? I've been collecting for a year and can't wait much longer. Almost bought them tonight but stopped myself. Don't want to double-dip Blu-rays. |

I've double dipped on a couple. I just accept that it's going to happen. Your just going to have to decide how bad you want these movies. 70% of BD movies are probably going to be double dipped at some point.
Look at Terminator 2 for example, It's already had two BD releases and I guarantee you come 2011, just under two years away that there will be a third for the 20th Anniversary of the film. LOTR will come out sometime next year and then in 2013 I would fully expect a 10th Anniversary edition for that trilogy as well. It happens. I wanted to hold out of Goodfellas as well bought ended up buying it. I know that in the next year or two it'll probably get an upgraded disc, come this time it will be up to me to decide wether or not I want to buy it again. The choice is YOURS. Nobody can tell you wether it's right or wrong. |

It has made me more cautious, and even on catalog titles (STAR TREK, JAMES BOND), much more likely to rent and wait to see if an uber edition gets announced. Even now I'm considering skipping Harry Potter 6 because it's not coming out Ultimate to start when the Ultimate line has already been announced. |

Thanks for the replies.
I know there is no answer; just need to get this problem off my chest. The 2 that I mentioned were early releases, 2007. I know re-releases happen, so is the time approaching? What is the life expectancy of a disc. 3 years, 5 years? |

I was lucky with Casino Royale, Full Metal Jacket and 5th Element, never got the first editions. Batman Begins also has PQ problems, from the review here, "One of the flagship Warner releases on HD DVD, Batman Begins was delayed on BD to better capitalize on interactive features. Unfortunately, Warner appeared to make no effort to capitalize on Blu-ray's overarching feature: superior capacity. The bitrates of the BD are no better than that of the HD DVD. That means the picture and sound are also held back by the HD DVD, and appear to have been sourced from the same transfer. The video and audio are not bad at all, but Batman Begins is not up to reference quality by any accurate assessment." Special features missing, not a real problem. Lackluster AQ and PQ are problems. Red line across someones face, get on it. I want Batman Begins, Goodfellas and The Usual Suspects; I just don't want 2 of each within a couple of years. |

Things were easier for me. I never owned Goodfellas on DVD, plus I got it for about 10 bucks. In addition my DVD copy of The Usual Suspects was "reformatted" to fill HDTV's (cropped to 1.78:1)
![]() So it was a win-win situation for me. Both great movies that on BD looks better than ever. |

edit: The DVD is not; it is OAR. I just have a feeling (a hope) that The Usual Suspects and Goodfellas will be out again soon; along with a few of the $9.99, 2006-2007 discs. Also, $9.99 for Usual Suspects is so cheap and sometimes I wonder why is it so cheap. Should I look a gift horse in the mouth? Are the studios planning a re-release? Some already re-released were ones that weren't done properly in the first year, 2006-2007 when Goodfellas and Usual Suspects arrived, T2, The Fifth Element, Full Metal Jacket. Not having HD sound is a big mistake, maybe they'll re-release Goodfellas for the 20th anniversary next year. Others just because of a new audio track, special features or even nothing, Superman Returns, Stranger Than Fiction, Casino Royale, and A Christmas Story. WHY NOT THE TWO I WANT!
