In terms of price, it's about the same. If you really want an upgrade, go for the Oppo BDP-83. It's $499, yes, I know, expensive, but not terribly so.

But it's one of the best Blu-Ray players currently on the market.

yes as you see im not realy worried about price i already have two blu-ray players but would like to end up linking my gear together all pioneer equip. but if not much better then the sony then not worth it but i have thought about getting rid of the ps3 as its like new hardly ever used , i bought two games for the ps3 and only played them once and thats all so just sits there

If price is not an issue, than the Oppo should win, hands down. The Oppo, I assure you, will be a significant upgrade from the Sony.

I second that, OPPO BDP-83 is the way to go. I just got mine last week and everthing from the packaging to the functionality of the machine is great. Plus it will play your whole media library; blurays, dvd (upconverted),cd, SACD, and dvd audio for a great value. It's a no brainer in my opinion.

I went through several bd players and was ready to give up on bd........slow loading, poor button response, waiting for the drawer to open, not to mention how they would just get "confused" every now and then. The first two were really poor at upscaling reg DVD's.

Got the Oppo.....what a winner!!! Excellent performance and the response and handling are as good as it gets.

How Oppo compares with PS3 for blu-ray PQ - not DVD upscaling. I thought PS3 blu-ray PQ is close to Oppo (if not on par). And Oppo DVD upscaling is significantly better.
