Default Ceiling

Hi guys, I'll eventually finish my ceiling with drop ceiling tiles. In the meantime, what do you guys recommend putting up there ? Somekind of fabric ? Something else ?

I saw this stuff one day when checking out acoustic treatments and thought of it again when I read your post. I have no idea if it would work, but it's something you could check out gates....

Thanks Forsberg ! Unless I'm reading wrong or on crack, does it say that it's 60 feet by 90 feet for $1.67 ? LOL

Did you see the "Unit" description? It says Ft, so I am pretty sure that it $1.67 per foot. Therefore, I think the cost of the whole roll would be at that rate.......

it depends on what you want to achieve doing so. did you want it to isolate the room? absorb reflections? disperse it like a diffusor?

in regards to the product mentioned, i think it might be a typo. or the fact that its a wholesale price, and might require some attention in addressing it properly (insulation always needs a good mask, gloves, and a number of health concerns in installation)...

in line with your gallery, id rather focus on purchasing acoustic treatments to treat those numerous reflective points, first off with the front stage wall, then the sides (id count at least two pairs of acoustic panels), and the back area. not to include bass traps for the two corners.

nice room by the way.

Well for now it's just an interim situation until I put the real ceiling. It's just a lot of money right now. Purchase acoustic panels even before doing the ceiling ? I thought a ceiling would be important before doing acoustics, no ?

Thanks for the compliment !

imo, it would be a lot more money double dipping on buying a temporary solution versus buying the ceiling tiles in the first place.

thats the question i asked earlier tho, what would be your goal in placing 'something else' there? is it to isolate the room?

in an already built room, yes it is. most of the sound produced by the front stage would travel horizontally, thus the level of importance given to ceiling treatments are set dead last compared to acoustic panels, bass traps, diffusors etc.

in your situation? not really. id rather address the axial mode of the room versus the reflections off the ceiling. with your current floorstanders quite close to the walls, id be concerned about that more than how it relates with the ceiling. i would tho consider heavy isolation material to be placed in the ceiling, prior to placing your ceiling tiles. but this would be considering you have a floor above you or what not to avoid sound leakage to the other rooms.

No, it would be to hide the open space and ugly wires in the meantime.

Yes the speakers are close to the wall which is why I have them on a small angle. That's the only option I have. The plan for the ceiling was to put Roxul Safe N Sound insulation then a drop ceiling. I don't really understand everything that comes with "treating" a room and acoustic panels and all that. I'm pretty lost when it comes to that stuff.

compromise is always a situation we are most familiar with.

hmm. in a nutshell, what acoustic treatment does is to minimize the relationship between the speakers have with your room. its like having speakers in a church for example. what these treatments do is to avoid all the echoes presented in that room, and to either amplify or minimize the signal. we want to hear what the speakers are reproducing, with little or no interference from its surroundings.
