Default need advice: keep 60GB or get slim PS3

I currently own a Japanese 60GB PS3 (with full PS2 BC, Emotion Engine included) and I'm considering to sell it to get a Japanese slim PS3. I wanted to hear your opinion on the matter. Here are some points regarding my use of my PS3:
  • I use my PS3 on a daily basis, 70% for watching blu-rays, 30% for gaming
  • I don't install Linux or another OS
  • I plan to buy a Onkyo amp to get surround and connect it to the PS3
  • fan noise is a very important factor for me, because I don't want it to bother me during quiet scenes when watching blu's
  • I don't play PS2 games at all anymore and don't plan to play them in the future. I'm selling them all off
  • USB ports: I now have 4 but at most I've only used 2 at once. I use them to connect external storage, connect the PS Eye from time to time and charge my controller
I think those are the main points to consider. If I can get a decent amount for my 60Gb, I could use the extra money to buy more Blu's and games or even get a second slim PS3, to be able to play region B Blu-rays and have a back-up system.

So, any suggestions on the matter? Things I might have overlooked? I'm mostly interested to hear feedback on the noise of the fan on the slim models, especially from people who have owned or own both a slim and fat PS3, to compare.

Thanks in advance for the feedback!

Well the biggest reason to keep the 60GB is for the PS2 games and if your not going to play anymore PS2 games(which is kind of hard for me to believe since there is plenty of Japanese PS2 games I would play if I could on my American 60GB).

But anyways though if not going to play any PS2 games then get the slim. Or you could be like me and own a 60GB and a slim PS3.

If you could keep the 60GB and still buy the slim then that would be the best thing to do. At least you have the option of playing PS2 games in the future and a second BD player never hurts for another room or if one goes.

Do you use the memory card slots on the front of your 60GB? I think that given your main points, if I were you, I would say go for it. Just make sure that Onkyo reciever you are getting will support the BD's surround options and you use two HDMI cables. One for the PS3 going to the reciever and one for going into your TV. Good luck.

I say have both. I have a launch 60gb that has been cured of it's YLoD affliction (for a very reasonable £40) and I'll be getting a 250gb Slim on Friday

Thank you all for your suggestions. Perhaps I'll just get a slim model and see if I keep the 60GB or not.

Good point on the card slots, didn't think of that. I've used them in the beginning but not anymore as I first transfer my photos to an external HDD and then connect that one to the PS3.

Also good point on the double HDMI cables. I thought I could use the pass-through option of the Onkyo receiver, so connect the PS3 to the Onkyo with HDMI and then again the Onkyo with HDMI to the TV.

Alas, even though there are still some good PS2 games coming out in Japan, I'm having a harder and harder time going back to the PS2-era graphics and find myself more and more attracted to hi-def gaming (and movies)

One final question: any news on the fan noise of the slim model? The sales person I talked to said the slim one is even quieter than the older models due to the reduced fan size, less heat from the processor and so on, but I'm sure every sales person tries to say the right thing to make a sale, so I'd love to hear from members on this site what your take is on the fan of the slim vs the older models. Thanks again!

Everything I have heard about the fan noise of the new slim models is that they are extremely quiet. Most reviewers have said they can't hear it even when they aren't playing movies or games. Also, they are planning on releasing a 250GB version of the slim here soon FYI

Comparing the noise of the fan on the slim to the 60GB is like comparing apples to oranges. Though I guess it's kind of hard to say at this point since it's still new but it can never be as loud as my 60GB

Thanks for the feedback everyone. We're visiting my relatives in Japan until the 28th and my usual shop has the slim 120GB on sale for 27,770 ... so I might pick one up if my wife doesn't object too much.

yeah, I think my 60Gb runs VERY quiet compared to the Xbox0360 I used to own (Only played one game on it but it was loud like a vacuum cleaner).
During loud gameplay and action scenes, the fan of the 60Gb doesn't bother me at all. However, during quieter scenes and so on, especially on warmer days, I've caught myself paying attention to the fan noise so that alone might make it worth to pick up a slim model ...

Have you ever cleaned out the fans on your 60GB?

Not thoroughly yet, no. I dust off the PS3 once to twice week with a special anti-static duster and blow gently in the ventilation. However, I haven't used something like a compressed air can or the 'trick' to make the fans go full force, out of fear those two might cause more damage than do good.

Vacuum the vents too. Also it's actually the opposite in the case of fan size. The larger the fan the quiter because it needs to spin less faster in order to push more air out. The smaller the fan the faster it needs to spin.

Hold off on the Slim until the 250 GB model comes out in a few weeks.

If you like to keep PS2 and PS1 emulation and if you feel like upgrading your hard drive, keep your 60 GB. I've kept mine; it's now an 80 GB, and it's smooth sailing from here.

The Slim still has the upgradeable hard drive.

I know; it still saves you money if you upgrade your Phat hard drive rather than buy a Slim. Beats wasting $299 off your wallet.

Possibly or at least pretty close to it if you sell it like on ebay or someplace like it and get a good buyer
