Exclamation What if.....

What if all along Toshiba made their HD-DVD Players able to support Blu-Ray Movies with a simple download to activate the other laser in the Drive? Think about it? Seems like that would be the funniest thing that could ever happen. Toshibas back up plan if you can't beat'em join'em lol.

Hmm yeah, I can imagine them putting the most expensive component in the entire battle in their cut price boxes and just hiding it from view .

Aren't both technologies actually interoperable? I remember reading in the early days that both Toshiba and Sony's tech could read each other's discs, but when they couldn't agree on terms, they took steps to individualize (thus the format war).

Could someone with a little more background elaborate?

Whilst they both use blue lasers, I'm almost positive blu-ray operates on a much finer wavelength so I don't think it would just be a matter of software for HDDVD players to read BD's.

It's not just the drive. Even if you can do that, the other parts must be upgraded as well, like the bandwith issue and the processing capabilities as well as the minimum specs needed to be a Profile 1.0/1.1/BD-Live.

Simply put, if Toshiba KNEW they wanted to manufacture BD players covertly, they have to be able to meet the minimum specs first.
