Default BDs worse than DVD counterpart

After reading about how some of the hitchcock movies are apparently better on DVD I'm curious to know if anyone finds their dvds to be surperior to Bluray. This could be because of a worse cut on the BD(Warriors, Dumb and Dumber), revisionist audio with no original(The Terminator, Dirty Harry) or a poor transfer that was botched really badly(family Plot, Back to the future).

Only one that comes to mind for me is Daredevil, but only because I greatly prefer the theatrical cut to the director's cut.

There's probably few Blu-rays that are actually worse than DVD compared to an upscale of the DVD. As bad as Family Plot looks on Blu-ray, it's still a bit better than the DVD upscaled if just for compression. They're from the same master, anyways.

However, you'll probably see a lot of examples for public domain material. For example, I opted for Warner's DVD edition of the Fleischer/Famous Superman cartoons because the Cinedigm/Gaiam Blu-ray is absolute garbage.

And the oldest DVD still in my collection is Amadeus, in all its flipper glory because the Blu-ray isn't that great and only the director's cut.

Op mentioned back to the future.?

Maybe it has been discussed before....
But I'm curious to see what's bad about the BTTF transfer?

I've heard good things, but this has me curious now

It’s just an older transfer from Universal that has DVD era DNR and edge enhancement applied. It could really use a new 4K remaster but it’s ludicrous to imply that the DVD is better.

All of the Hitchcock’s are better on blu, except for maybe Family Plot.

I just watched Larry Cohen's The Stuff on blu-ray from Arrow Video. While the blu-ray trumps any other dvd release, there is one special feature that is a DVD exclusive and that is the commentary Cohen recorded for the Anchor Bay dvd. This is a sad omission as the track is really good, as Cohen tracks usually are.

The DVD is far better, actually. The Blu-ray looks disgusting.

I watched the Back to the Future blu-rays a couple years ago for the first time at about the time I was calibrating a new television. Something looked so off about them. I didn't have the technical knowledge to say why exactly. But I looked up the video review here on this site and I felt like I was being gaslit. And it made me more paranoid about my TV settings.

Also, I just recently got rid of my Mickey's Christmas Carol blu-ray because I knew I'd always opt to watch an uncropped previous transfer.

The Female Prisoner Scorpion series and Audition.

I can't blame Arrow for how their boxset turned out, but it's the most disappointing release ever for me. I love that series, and seeing it like that was a huge let down. Same with Shout! Factory's blu of Audition. The color timing is so off it ruins the movie for me. I prefer the look of Chimera's DVD. I'd even take my worn out Chimera VHS with the bleeding colors over Shout's lifeless transfer. Luckily Arrow's blu is much closer to how I like it.

The worst blu ray i have is the TV movie Return To The Batcave. The swedish blu ray is worse than a vhs, it's truly jaw dropping in it's woeful quality.

The only one I can think of is:

The Deadly Spawn. Check the first few screens on the link and notice how all the detail is scrubbed off with dnr, yet present on the dvd. Massive fail!

While Near Dark does have dnr issues, it is nowhere near as bad most make it out to be. Notice how much sharper it is on blu.

It's an old DVD era transfer, but it's better than the DVD IMO

The remastered UK DVD of Threads vs the US Severin Blu. Although after the success of the Threads DVD, the same remaster since came out on Blu.
