USA new to blu need help!

I have a sony S350 (no manual) just received it with 6 BR discs, hooked it up to my RCA D52W19 tv. picture is not blu ray quality. my other upconverting player played standard dvds with a much nicer image. so the settings must be wrong? I know its supposed to be set for 1080i not 1080p ..how do I check this? any suggestions as to what the deal is?? Im sure this tv has limitations being a few years old but the image was better with upconverted dvds!! thank you all very much!
