Default Marantz ?, sell my Sony?

I pretty much know what I want to do, but let me ask you guys your thoughts.

I have a guy that I sold my entry level Sony STR-DG710 to early this year. He asked to buy my STR-DG920 today for $375-400.

Many of you know that I love the Marantz 5003. I won't have enough cash to get a 5003, but I will be able to buy the 4003 outright, with the money I get from selling the Sony.

The 4003 accepts LPCM, and my BDP can decode all the audio, so I get lossless audio, Plus I gain the very important pre-outs. Marantz's specs are usually right on the money, so I believe it would be true that I would be getting 80 wpc, vs the 40-55 wpc that the Sony is probably giving me.

My question is, do you think I will lose anything by getting the 4003 over the 5003?

The 4003 says it does "HDMI v1.3a Switching/ v1.1 Repeating" please explain to me what that actually means. Does that mean that it doesn't affect 1.3a signals coming in from a BDP to the HDTV, only upscaled analog signals????

Thanks Steve

I would have a hard time letting go of bitstreaming. I know it is just lights, but a loss in a feature you will probably regret.

You cannot splurge the 50 bucks and get a recertified one?

Oh nice, I didn't even know he was selling a 5003. I could probably do either.

You know Jason, whats funny is that I use the BDP to internally decode all my DDTHD sound tracks anyways... I don't with DTS MA, funny I know....

That is the route I would go. The biggest things you will notice at first is how far behind some manufacturers are in features. The Sony GUI and auto setup are second to none as far as I am concerned. The gain in power should make up for most, if not all of that though.

That is funny how everyone want to knock on Sonys and the other MFGs are just as low power oriented as Sony, yet the Features and Ease Of Use on the Sonys is, like you said, second to none.

If your Sony has preouts, buy an amplifier. In my opinion, going from a receiver to another receiver that may be slightly better is a waste of money. If you want to buy the $5,000 Denon receiver, that is a different story. I will gladly come over to your house and help you set it up.

Switching/repeating is a bit confusing. A receiver with an HDMI switcher does not process the HDMI input and just passes it through. An HDMI repeater, however, processes the audio portion in the input signal and sends (repeats) the signal to the destination device. Receivers that have switcher and repeaters will have less handshake issues and can send the signal over much longer distances. Receivers that have switching do not necessarily have repeaters, but receivers that have repeaters will do all the switching.

Well here is what I found. I have a 6.1 setup, and when I matrix I use the dts Neo 6 Cinema, for 6.1 post processing. With dts tracks everything is awesome, with DD/DD THD tracks it seems subdued, just a little, if I convert it to LPCM it doesn't sound subdued at all. Now with DD EX sound tracks like Star Wars.. No issues.

Yeah, if it weren't for the preouts...no way!!! I could easily be happy with a Sony ES as a pre/pro.

BD, my Sony doesn't have pre-outs. If it did I wouldn't want anyother receiver... and I am pretty sure JasonR would have kept his too. Jason?

EDIT:: Yeah, If I had bought the ES2400 instead, this tread wouldn't exsist.

Then get a low cost Yamaha that has preouts and invest your money on a Cinepro amplifier. Two little girls for a kick-ass amplifier is fair trade

Shipped UPS ground and insured. Why am I selling it? Lol well obviously you haven't followed me on this forum. I have a bad habit of changing up stuff all the time. I actually want a Pioneer Elite receiver for the living room. I got a p.e. sc-05 for bedroom and love it. Only real usage my marantz has got has been since the end of august till now since I finished my projector setup. It was originally for my bedroom since I kept getting delayed on getting my sc-05. The sc-05 was finally made available shortly after I got my marantz so it sat for awhile as I then decided to go ahead with my living room setup and use it in there. If I get a Marantz again it will be the pre/pro 8003...otherwise I'm sold on the Pioneer Elites.

Well that is why I am considering the 4003 or the used 5003 from Sean Farley 2, both have pre-outs and therefore would allow me to give you my children for your 6 channel amp.

BTW, my wife was thinking of a movie night at your place.... I will PM you with dates that may work for us,.... we will be busy in November, but I will give you some dates to see if it works within your and your wifes schedule.

Dude, I can hardly follow up on my own posts on this forum... things move so fast sometimes.... plus I haven't been on as much recently as before...

Anything about Marantz I should know? Seems your not the first one to sell theirs... are there issues with them.?

I have added two large DIY subwoofers (a 15" and a 12") to the HT room since your last visit. Bring bass-heavy music and movies with you. Don't forget ear plugs
