How do you focus?

Sometimes i feel my brain had a brain of its own. I have no control over it. It'll purposefully do what I tell it not to. Sometimes I tell it to think of something else but it stays on the subject from before. I really hate it. I can't focus I really try but it's like my mind doesn't focus just because I tell it to, like a child.
