I haven't been to a Public Library or rented a Blu-ray in years. But I just found out my local library rents new release Blu-rays/DVD for $3(for 3 days). For this price its a steal considering they get movies on the release day. They don't have a 1 month delay like netflix and redbox since they buy them from an independent distributor. To my amazement they even have Aladdin on Blu-ray which just came out on Tuesday. I mostly buy my Blu-rays now and stream but I think Im gonna start renting Blu-rays again.

Wouldn't it be funny if public libraries became Blockbuster Video-type places these days? With the proliferation of e-books and the endless supply of folks too cheap to buy Blu-rays, I can totally see this happening. It could become their bread and butter

When I die, I want my Blu-ray collection to go to the local library.
They'll probably have enough sense to keep The Cheerleaders, Twins of Evil, The Beach Girls, and The Devil's Wedding Night out of the kids section. Even if they don't, though, I'll still be making the world a better place by passing the collection on to a good home. |

My specific branch has DVD only, but there is a free state interlibrary loan system, and there are some Blu-rays on there which can be shipped to any branch free. I've gotten some BDs, but more often than not, since it's free, I'll settle for DVD.

The Chicago suburbs where my brother lives have LOTS of Blu Rays, both new and catalog titles ( even Twilight Time!) and there is no charge to check any of them out. Plus one card for a single library grants you access to many other libraries in the State of Illinois. On my visits there we have gotten dozens of great titles to sample before buying.

I guess your library is well funded. My library has a free movie section too but that's because they're donated. The newer rentals are purchased by the library.

I work at my local public library and funnily enough my job is processing all the a/v materials. We have tons of dvds. Mostly tv shows, documentaries and kids movies that are based on books. A few blu/dvd combos. Our library is free also.

My 2 local libraries used to charge, but the last few years they stopped charging. They have BDs and usually new releases. I hardly ever use the library though, I almost always buy all my films myself. I like to OWN my films. I will rent something if it tickles my fancy every once in a long while, as a blind watch.

The libraries in the Chicago suburbs that I mentioned above all have great collections of Criterion titles, mostly DVDs, but one or two libraries in more upscale areas carry lots of Criterion Blus. Given the artistic nature of Criterion I'm sure AV librarians have little trouble justifying these in their collections.

What county is your library in? I'm in the bay area and there is no charge for blu-rays. Libraries are county based.

I have three library systems near by and one of them charges - $1. The others are 7 day loans but are free.

Ahhh. That's good the city went outside Alameda County to offer a library. Mine is Contra-Costa county, so more funding hence the free media.
