Default Help with shelving for movies

Hi I am in the process of remaking my basement and just painted everything. I removed something that was covering a wall and thus now have room to put shelving where I want to put my movies. So far the people on here have had good advice so I thought I'd ask your opinnions for what I should shoot at doing. I want something more horizontal, but if it's verticle that's fine as long as it doesn't go too far up as I have posters and such that I'm going to put up once this is done. Thanks.

Here's a link for a picture of the wall itself. It's 106" long and the walls on the side come out to 14".

I have a very similar space in my home theater room, and I used a series of Billy Bookcases from Ikea that work perfectly. You can set the shelf heights, so DVD cases fit perfectly. The basic bookcase appears to be on sale for $59 each. Here it is on Ikea's site:

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/ca...ng_room/11683/

If I can I'll post pictures of my setup when I get home tonight. I connected three bookcases, with 2 CD racks in between. I also added doors to the bottom half, to store accessories, such as my sound meter and game controllers. Up top I have a ton of Blu-rays, DVDs, SACDs, and CDs.

Great! Thanks for the advice. If you wouldn't mind getting those pictures up sometime, I'd appreciate it very much.

I too am using Ikea Billy bookcases. See gallery for photos. I did buy two extra shelves per tall bookcase to maximize shelf case. The only thing I don't like about these shelves is the depth. To solve this problem, you can cut 1 by 4 to the width of the shelf as a spacer so that the movies are closer to the front of the shelf.

Check my shelf pics in my gallery. If you want measurements I can send em to you. Mine will hold up to 1,500 movies and it cost me 110.00 to make.

Wow obi- I really like the built-in rack you guys put together. Came out pretty great! The movie racks you guys made look good too.

Have you thought about fitting a removable back to your component rack? could have holes for cabling and air flow but give the front side a bit more "finished" look. Just a thought.

I'm also looking for a storage solution for movies. I'm over 400 Blu's now, and about 200 DVD's.

The Billy case seems like a possibility. Does anyone know if the doors are a frosted glass, or a clear glass?

I ask, because I don't like to display my movies. When we have family over, I don't want Grandma to see my SAW movies and keel over.

I want to say you can choose either, but I can't remember for sure. I have the Billy cases but no doors for me. I also bought it with 2 extra shelves which works out perfectly for movies.

*edit* Here's a link to all the Billy solutions- there are quite a few. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/ca...e/10364/11683/

Thanks. I used one side of my entertainment center for the media cabinet. Won't be upgrading that anytime soon. My Dad and I had a great time putting together the movie racks. Took about half the day. I wanted it to look like it had always been there. We were pretty pleased with the way it came out.

Cool, thanks for the info. I'll probably give the Atlanta store a call later and ask about the doors--it's hard to tell online if they're translucent or transparent.

We don't have an IKEA here in Nashville, but there is a great company that will go down to ATL, pick it up for you, and deliver it for a modest fee.

No problem. I was having a bit of computer difficulty at home last night, so I was unable to get the photos up. I'll try again tonight. I think you'll like the Billy Bookcases for that space, because you can tailor the pieces together to fit the space better. I have a corner piece, that comes out flush with the adjoining wall, and then the bookcases follow the length of the recessed area perfectly. It really looks like it was designed for the space. Plus, the bookcases look great, and are inexpensive compared to other bookcases or shelving units.

I bought extra shelves as well for the tall units. It's pretty much necessary in order to make full use of it for Blu-ray / DVD cases. I don't mind the depth at all, so I don't use spacers to move my cases forward. However, I do still have some relic VHS tapes of Disney and other films my wife won't part with. I double up on those to minimize their shelf space.

The glass option for the doors is clear, but you can change or cover some of the glass doors. The doors I use are solid, and the finish matches the rest of the cabinets. If you used doors on the bottom and open up top, which I do, you can stash your gory films behind the doors on the bottom. I use my covered portions to store arcade sticks, extra game controllers and stategy guides. Oh, and I have comic books stored in there as well.

The other IKEA furniture we have is pretty sturdy. (Bless the Swedes.) But do you find the shelves bow under the weight at all?

I didn't see any solid doors on the IKEA web site. I'll have to look at them again, but that's a great tip--thanks!

Nope, my shelves haven't bowed at all. I just painted my home theater room, so I had to pull all the shelves and cabinets during the process. I checked the shelves for bowing, and they're all flat as a, well, a board, I guess. I'm not sitting by them right now, but I seem to recall that they're approximately 3/4" thick. I have a bunch of strategy guides and HT magazines on one shelf, and it all weighs a ton. Still, it didn't bow under the weight at all, and it has been that way for almost 4 years now.

As for the doors, there definitely are solid doors available in each of the finish styles. For my room, the bookcases are in medium brown, which is available at Ikea, but the option is not really shown well on their web site.

If my home PC behaves, I'll add some photos tonight or tomorrow. I'm overdue on starting a gallery anyway. Now that the room is finally coming to completion I have no excuse.

Hey MAD, how tall are your posters that you want to put above the shelves?

I have a 5' tall Oskar Media shelf that is perfect for blu's, I love it. I got it for $68 at Target, you can check out the pic in my gallery. It fits 483 blu's exactly. I have 10' ceilings, so I have plenty of room above my shelf, where my Pulp Fiction poster resides.

Also, if you're looking for something shorter, here's a great one I saw recently by one of the members "Bethany" on here. She said it fits 325 blu's, about 65 per shelf.

Here's the amazon link for hers, and her gallery

Okay, I managed to take a few pics and start a gallery, so you can see the Ikea shelf setup I'm using. Once I get the rest of my room project together, I'll post more pics. I highly recommend these shelves, and they come in many different finishes:

That's a gorgeous setup you've got there! L

We have no IKEA here in Nashville, but we do have a company, ModerNash, that will drive down to the Atlanta location and bring stuff up for a modest fee. I've used them before with great success.

So I ordered 2 of the Billy bookcases in black, with their aluminum/frosted glass doors, and then a Benno CD rack to put between them, plus some extra shelves (per your recommendation).

If my math is right, I should be able to put 55-60 Blus per shelf, which will give me room for all my Blu's, DVD's, games, box sets, and space for expansion.

Thanks again for the info and pics!

No problem, happy to help out! Thanks for the compliment! I think the Billy bookcases were the best cost-effective solution for the space.

Which width of the Billy bookcases did you order? Actually, I've got both widths in my setup. Give me a little time, and I'll tell you how many Blu-rays you can comfortably fit per shelf.

Oh, and this is to Mad. If you're still interested in hanging posters over your shelves, there are half size Billy bookcases as well. The CD racks are not available half size though.

Thanks, that might be good info to have.

We bought the 32" width units, 2 of them. If I'm estimating correctly, that'll be 16 shelves worth of space between the 2, plus the Benno CD rack in the middle for music and games I'm currently playing, wife's decor, etc.

Mad, I bet you could make a sweet-looking setup with the half-sized Billy bookcases and the Benno CD racks, since they are available in assorted colors. Would make a nice contrast with the wall color and really stand out!
