Default Is Tim Burtons Alice in Wonderland a Sequel?????

I was just on disney bd live and went to download the alice in wonder land trailer and in the synopsis part it reads Alice adventures to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl reuniting with her childhood friends and embarking on a fantastical journey to find her true destiny

i thought it was just a live action version of the old cartoon

Alice In Wonderland is actually two books.

That's interesting. I just thought it was the one book. So is the movie based on the second book then?

The movie's not based on anything, it's an original "sequel" based on Tim's cheap goth-wannabe interpretation of everyone else's interpretation of the books.
(They could have called it "Return to Wonderland", or some such, if not for Disney wanting to shove corporate identification down our throats. )

Now, if you want a REAL version of "Looking Glass", that's already been done, and a tad more faithfully:

They use the "Alice returns years later" plot convenience for the same reason Tim did (they didn't want to bother with child-actor restrictions), but otherwise the British version stays to the original Carroll text.
Which is more than can be said for, ahem, some versions.

(But failing that, the '83 PBS stage version did a text-faithful version of both books...And yes, with another post-pubescent Alice, but that was the stage production's idea:

When I first started viewing the trailer, I was hoping it was a live action version of American McGee's Alice. It too uses a return to Wonderland scenario.

A couple years ago I did a report on Lewis Carroll, so the "darkness" and creepiness of the movie isn't too far-fetched in my opinion considering who he was.

But anyway I'm guessing it's based mostly on the first book. and what are the differences (if any) between the book and the Disney movie?

The original disney uses elements from both the first book and second book.

I believe Burton's version is going to try to stay in cannon with the first movie, or well try to be respectful of it's existence and be more of a stand alone sequel. Sort of like the new Star Trek. I'm glad it's a sequel, the first movie is fantastic and could never be replaced so it's better to give it a good follow up instead. They can't make a "Through the looking Glass" movie because the first one already used some of the elements from the second book, so Burton is going to probably use some of the unused elements from each book instead. I think it's great and he picked a good cast. Alan Rickman as the caterpillar, Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen.

I see it as simply another adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classics.

So, is she the Red Queen (bossy but harmless), or the Queen of Hearts (with the quoted penchant for head-chopping)?...That's two different characters, you know.
If Tim can't get that bit of book-fact straight, I don't much fancy his chances on the rest of it.

(The pre-release art also depicts her holding a pig, which means Tim's written the Duchess out of the story as well--
In fact, why don't we just get rid of all the extraneous characters, and pile them into one big villain we can beat up?)

Of course I know that. That's why I said it borrows unused elements from both books. Tim's Red Queen is definitely going to have elements of the Queen of Hearts but she's an entirely different character from the other Queen in this movie stated by Burton. The reason some characters are taken out is for cinematic purposes. It's not like Harry Potter which is a butchering the book.

It's one of the only video games my wife has ever actually wanted to play. She's a Carroll buff (her thesis had a section on him)...Now if only I can convince her Lewis Carroll wrote Debbie Does Dallas and Pirates II: Stagnetti's Revenge...

I'm more and more looking forward the Marilyn Manson's movie about Luis Carol than this shit that Burton is giving us.
