Default Subcontracting Blu-ray authoring

I eventually plan to get a Blu-ray burner and make my own discs, but until I do can anyone suggest where I can find a company which would do the authoring and burning for me at a reasonable price for small projects (e.g. weddings)? Thanks.

Definately not yet

Honestly, it'd probably be cheaper to pick up Premiere CS3 and a good burning program and spend some time with the books than to pay for even one project to be done, at least right now. 2 projects and you could probably build a nice dedicated system to go with it.

What are you shooting/editing on?

You may want to try calling R&B Films (http://www.rbfilms.com/) who has been posting here lately. They might be kind enough to assist you or at least point you in the right direction of an authoring studio. Mention you heard about them on Blu-ray.com!

Even with the billions behind the porn industry, they are having difficulty finding authoring sources (but that is somewhat of a different matter).

Like that last poster indicated, maybe dig deep into CS3 and roll your own.

Best Luck.

It's simply that to get started with DVD authoring (pro-level) cost under half what it costs to get started with BR authoring. Combine that with the prosumer versions of Scenarist and such not being ready yet and very few people are willing to jump in.

If that's the case I may go ahead and get started now, but I'm trying to see if I can put off the investment a little longer. I'm working in Edius and can render out to a standard HDV 1080i file which works on the Sony Playstation 3, so at least I have a way to show my work until I get the whole Blu-ray thing figured out.

The above are all about the mechanics of making a Blu-Ray backup. Before you comit to this, do assure yourself that you can get an internally consistent set of files over the time needed to make a backup. The best speed you could expect is about 2 hours to fill a 25GB disc and 4 hours for a 50GB dual layer disc. The speed is much worse if you just drag and drop instead of using Cyberlink's Power2Go application or the accompanying .iso burner. If you drag and drop, it will be about half that speed since it has to open the directory, add the file then close it again. A related discussion is here

Default If you are shooting weddings

If you do shoot enough weddings as a business I can only recommend getting into Premiere Pro CS3 and going that route. Encore CS3 comes packaged with Premiere Pro.

As a wedding videographer myself it would seem to be that subcontracting out Blu-Ray work would not really be cost effective for a single wedding.

For the cost of Premiere and a burner you should be able to recoup the cost with just a few weddings.

Yeah, it turns out that a company called "CustomFlix" is gearing up to do HD authoring for $499 per project without menus or another $50 with menus. Might as well buy a burner for $450+ and figure it out myself...
