I just purchased the Panasonic Home theater 7.1 blue ray player. I also purchased the Transformers 2 blue ray dvd. I feel the picture isnt that great at all for blue ray. Its very grainy and just not what i expected.. also it doesnt even fit the full screen ( i have a 46 inch samsung lcd ). There are black bars on the top and the bottoms. Any thing i need to change or adjust?

Hello and welcome to the site!
As mentioned, my first suggestion would be to make sure your TV is properly calibrated. If you don't want to go out and get a calibration disc, you can look through the Samsung calibration thread and see what settings others are using. You can then try their settings, and see if the picture improves for you. |

I think it's important to mention that calibrating your tv isn't going to remove film grain (which was one of your concerns). Proper calibration, including setting your sharpness to zero, will help to keep from unintentionally enhancing the grain, but the grain is inherent in film (and Transformers 2 was shot on film). So if your expectation is that Blu-ray should provide a grain-less image, you may be disappointed.

1) Any film shot on film has film grain. It's SUPPOSED to be there. There is no way to remove film grain without removing detail from the image.
2) Any film shot in an aspect ratio wider than 16:9 will still have letterbox bars, even on an HDTV. It's not as simple as "all widescreen movies fill a widescreen TV completely." The two most common ratios are 1.85:1 and 2.35:1. The former (and very close ratios) will fill your HDTV completely, however the latter is a wider ratio and still requires some letterboxing to be shown in the proper ratio. |

Everyone is so quick to jump on the "grain is supposed to be there!" bandwagon that they're forgetting just how much a bad setting can really enhance grain and make for an unpleasant image. I've seen sharpness and high contrast just kill a picture.
Yes, it's supposed to be there but doubtful to the degree that he's most likely seeing it. That calibration will do wonders. |

No one has mentioned to check the player settings. If the player is set to output 480i/p than it is going to be bad. You may want to check and see if the TV is receiving a 1080p signal as well. There should be an INFO selection on the display to see what it is getting. Also some of your default picture settings should still give a great picture. Make sure you are not on a sport setting or a dynamic setting as this will oversaturate the picture. Natural or Theater should be a good start.
Good luck. You should have no doubt that Blu-ray is a giant step-up in picture/audio quality so I know something is not setup properly. |
