Default Dead Man re-issue coming January 13th from Lionsgate

So, according to Amazon this Lionsgate release will be 1:85, as opposed to the 1:78 that Echo Bridge used. What are the odds that we will be seeing a new transfer? Anyone have any info on what we can be expecting from this new release?

Are you sure the Echo Bridge transfer was actually 1.66:1? The specs entered by Blu-Ray.com reviewer, Martin Liebman (kisikiboy97), have that release at 1.79:1. Still haven't gotten around to watching my copy.

I think that's a mistake on the listing here. I've watched it and its 1:78. I'd buy this just for the correct 1:85 aspect ratio though, if nothing else. I hate the slight cropping.

The difference between 1.78:1 and 1.85:1 is minimal and often unnoticeable due to overscan.

Not unless a movie has been cropped, as was the case with Snowpiercer.

The main reason we will never see a Criterion release of this is that Miramax will never give up the rights. Some years back, Jarmusch himself tried to buy back the film so Criterion could do it but Miramax wouldn't sell.

Also, Jarmusch and Harvey Weinstein did not get along at all during the post-production of the film.

Your saying this based upon? I mean if we're getting a different aspect ratio, maybe theres hope? Or is this pretty standard stuff for when rights revert back to Lionsgate?

When Echo Bridge lost the Miramax titles and they went to Lionsgate, Lionsgate has started reissuing basically the same exact discs, cover art changed a little to include Lionsgate, etc., but there is no remastering done. Lionsgate's first reissue wave included Godzilla vs. Biollante, Hellraiser collection, Prophecy collection, etc. - all identical to Echo Bridge's releases. So it's pretty much a given all of these will just be reissues of what's come before.

The only main difference is the inclusion of an Ultraviolet copy (though Godzilla vs. Biollante didn't have one, possibly due to licensing issues).

So is the different aspect ratio just a typo then?

Amazon listings almost always have typos at first

Don't suppose anyone's picked this up? While I'm sure the master is the same, I was wondering if it was a different encode. There's a brief (one or two frames) encoding glitch on the Echo Bridge disc, and I was wondering if it was still there on the Lionsgate.
