I've had the Onkyo HT-S5200 7.1 for a while now but have been too busy to really get it configured properly. I had just used a digital optical cable to send sound from the PS3 to the receiver because I couldn't get the HMDI audio to output when I tried that way.
I'm now trying to get this working with the full 7.1 capabilities so I want to use HDMI audio, but I was reading in the support guide from Onkyo that HDMI audio will only be output through the HDMI out. It also says if you want to use the speakers connected to the receiver as well as HDMI video/audio then you must use a 2nd analog or digital audio connection. So here is my question: Can this receiver actually receive HDMI audio from the PS3 and output it to the speakers? If they market the system as 7.1, and by my understanding you use HDMI to get 7.1, then this should work. I really can't figure it out though. Thanks for any help you can offer. |

Now I'm wishing I had spent $100 less and gotten the 5.1 system. If I were to just buy the SR606 receiver would I be able to still use all the speakers and sub from the 5200? Last edited by tomlinson21rb; 10-26-2009 at 08:01 PM. |

Just looked up your model HTIB from onkyo's website and it looks like that model doesn't have 7.1 analog inputs even, so I don't know how if any way you would be able to get 7.1 audio input into it.
All of the speakers will be compatible with just about any receiver you could hook them up to. You just need to make sure that you find one that is an HDMI 1.3 repeater rather than HDMI passthrough. I definately like the SR606 that came with the 7100 since it is still powerful enough to handle upgrades to the speakers, but there might be better options. I ended up upgrading the fronts of my setup to some Polks and it's now an even better HT. |

Does it seem like false advertising to put out a 7.1 system that you can't get 7.1 from? |

It is a 7.1 system in that it will matrix 7.1 from a 5.1 input via Dolby PLIIx. But it is not capable of receiving a true 7.1 signal, nor Dolby TrueHD and DTS MasterAudio, as these lossless signals are only output from HDMI. You are correct that stepping up to a 606 or 607 will solve this problem. And, yes, your speakers will do just fine with either of those receivers.
