With the hype it got and the Japanese Academy win, it was a letdown. Pretty generic stuff with a cast of good people doing some bland work.

I thought there was not enough drama or depth to make it the "Best Picture" winner that year....

The movie was overall ok. There were a few touching moments, a few funny ones. It unfortunately suffered from a few problems. I disagree with manic in that I felt there was too much drama going on but I agree with not enough depth. The movie might have benefited from an extra half-hour of character development and fleshing out some of the various storylines occurring within the main storyline. But the dance scenes were very well done, perhaps the best part of the movie. The acting overall seemed weak. It left me wanting more but never delivered. I felt like this could have been a great movie but it was hindered by some weak acting and an underdeveloped story. The movie was good, but not as great as it could have been.
PQ: 4.25/5
Overall pretty nice. Background detail was strong. There were a few occasions where the PQ was hazy. No EE. Light layer of grain. Facial detail was pretty good. Appeared to be some mild DNR going on, but I will re-look at it later.
SQ: 4/5
Overall satisfied with the audio. I thought some scenes would give my sub a workout, but did not deliver (specifically the ending, where I felt the LFE was underutilized).

If you are curious about it, I'd recommend trying to rent the Viz DVD and see if you like it.

When I said "Not enough drama" meant that the dramatic scenes had no depth or resonance with me, and so I didn't click with it at all.
Since the DVD is readily available in the USA, rent it if interested, but inaudible to the non-Japanese, their local dialects and accents were, for the most part, not authentic to the region.... That's what you get for hiring non-talented actors....

Didn't like this much at all. If you absolutely must have a Japanese Blu Ray with 'Girl' in the title, I recommend 'Swing Girls', which is 100 times more charming than this, not to mention extremely funny.

Ah, misunderstood you then. I agree, it felt like so much was missing as well.

+100 to Swing Girls. Much better than Hula Girls. The Blu-ray of Swing Girls is top notch.
