Default HD DVD: We're Targeting MySpace

I'm pretty sure that I was the first person ever to create a Myspace profile for an optical disc. It seems that HD DVD is about to do somthing with Myspace. If they do, they just totally ripped off my idea.

I just don't get the greatness of this interactivity stuff. When I'm watching a movie, I don't want to have icons and crap pop up while viewing it, and I want to watch the movie. If I want to interact, I'll buy a video game. Also, when you watch a movie w/ friends, what if one person wants to use a certain interactive feature (like an online poll which pops-up while watching), but other people don't want to watch it? That's just going to start a fight.

I like the technology progressions, but there are some that I just don't think are worth it, and interactive features in movies are one of them, format aside. I don't care about BD-J, except for it's finalization will get us Batman Begins on BD.

Oh, and this "myspace crowd," is just horrible buzz speak.

I would get pissed off if crap kept popping up while I was watching a movie!
I like the pop up menus, but other than that, I could care less about anything else related to interactive features (during the movie).

Indeed. I bought a movie for just the movie. I don't care about the 10 hours of bonus footage, or the wierd quizzes that have no purpose.

i don't understand why you'd wanna "re-edit" the movie? and what kind of polls are you talking about? buying the clothes the stars are wearing... what if one of those movies happen to be like... the fifth element? it all sounds like a bunch of malarky... when did movie watching become something more than just enjoying it??

I feel exactly the same way. The only reason HD DVD is promoting the crap out of it is because it is the only thing that makes it "better" than blu-ray right now, which will be very short lived. I have no interest in the interactivity disrupting my movie watching experience.

Does anyone know how film-makers feel about this? I get the feeling that people like Spielberg wouldn't want a bunch of crap popping up while people view their work. Kind of like people interrupting you while you're talking.

I'd think they want the movie presented as they shot it (like Bruckheimer said in that hollywoodinhidef interview), not w/ a bunch of crap distracting the viewer.

That is the problem with Tosh's strategy, watching HD on your laptop?

I have stated this before, are you kidding? 480p vs 1080p on a 17" screen? Why would someone buy an HD disc to watch on a PC when the DVD is 5-10 dollars cheaper?

Someone from Uni or Tosh (i forget which) said "we are targetting the myspace crowd"

Who was in on that marketing meeting? How is that demographic conducive to watching HD movies? Because someone has a myspace page, they want HD video?

Does j6p myspace guy who is over 18 (not sure of that % by the way) have an internet connection run to his home entertainment system?

The interactivity is just not something to hang your hat on for j6p.

This is what is maddening, it is like Tosh and Uni don't even want to win this war. Their marketing depts have been severely out-flanked by BR. (as i have also stated before)

I just want this to end and at this point, the quicker way to end it is for BR to win because Tosh just didn't prepare itself correctly and is fighting the bad fight.

PS: The reason people keep pushing for Uni to go blu and you don't hear people pushing Sony or Disney is because BR has a software advantage, 1 is easier to convert than 2-3, and we all know Sony won't switch until BR is dead and gone.....................it's as simple as that.

I posted this on another forum, these are my thoughts on this subject

The whole marketing idea behind the interactive TV is absurd. It reminds me of those old cheesey 50's shows that displayed a "house of the future":

-"By the year 1975 all kitchen work will be done by robots and moving sidewalks will replace cars".

I don't think people get what they are tring to do.

They want their player to be online enabled, so that their movies extra will be more than trailers and the making of the movie. It will alow users to access internet content from the comfort of their living room. This has already have been done with current DVD movies that have DVD-rom capabilities. It uses the internet on your PC to acces more extras not on disc. But Java enabled players will alow online apps to run directly on standalone unit to make it even easier for n00bs to acces their fansites and stores ultimately to buy more licenced merchandise.

Unfortunately for HD-DVD, Blu-ray will have that capability, and sooner than you think, it will be availible way before HD-DVD can even exploit it.

Then again, if you exploit it, what diffrence will it make? How many people will even connect their player to a network? Besides there is something that almost everyone has that can do all that and more. Your PC. Why would we need network capabilities on a movie player if we all have PC's?

it's just another gimmick to make HD DVD followers feel like they are getting the better deal....

they say they are more interested in this stuff than the better audio and try to convince themselves that VC-1 is better than mpeg-4 until they are blue in the face....

and even besides that, they try to ignore the fact that blu-ray uses mpeg-4 by saying "VC-1 is better than MPEG-2"...."yeah, we know this...but what about MPEG-4?".....and then you hear crickets...

they spend all their time trying to angle things into their favor when they don't stop to think about what a waste HD DVD is....

the only people that should own HD DVD are people who own a BD player and are way too impatient to wait for Universal going neutral...and the other select titles that have come out on HD DVD before they did BD...

Washington, D.C. (July 19, 2007) -- The co-president of the HD DVD Promotional Group said yesterday that the format's new Interactive TV features are designed to attract the 'MySpace' generation.

'MySpace' generation??? What!? Broke, teenage hookers?? Good luck with that..

I was a MySpacer from the beginning when it was all about the bands on it... all I know is I couldn't be more of the target market they want (25 years old, actually have money, needs to be entertained 24/7)... and these "interactive features" couldn't be more of WHAT I DON'T WANT!!

Back when I was burning DVDs I love how the program ONLY burned the movie.. and cut out all the fat.

Give me the best uncompressed audio and video you can possibly fit onto the biggest BD disc you can afford to produce. THAT'S IT!!!

If all the 8 year olds one day take over our economy and become the majority of consumers than maybe these "interactive features" will sink Blu-Ray after all.

to their defense....teenagers have the most disposable income...

but...that money usually goes towards a PS3....

I used the computer-enabled features on DVD a few times, to see what they were about, but didn't care for them. I understand people wanting more features as in commentary, deleted scenes, and all that (even though I just want the movie), I just haven't heard people get real excited about all this interactive stuff. If you tell them any of it, like the claim total on the Fast and Furious HD DVD, they'll say, "cool," but I don't think that makes them rush out to buy a player. They could tally up the total jail sentence in Crank, and I'm still not buying it because I want a movie I like.

The only people who I've heard get excited about interactivity are HD DVD fanboys. I'm sure there are BD people, but I just haven't heard them being vocal about their displeasure with the current state of things. Someone linked a video here about Fox's plans w/ BD-J, showing some future stuff, and all the responses were just, "cool, interesting, etc." Nobody was thinking it was the best thing since breasts, which is what Graffeo wants us to believe.
